BMW has quietly applied for a European trademark for the Triumph badge that was last used on the Acclaim saloon in 1984. The application was filed by BMW on 27 October last year and published on 21 December.

The application is classed as ‘Community Trade Mark E10374627’ and is for BMW to use the laurel wreath badge on a wide range of goods. Aside from vehicles, the application covers jewellery, watches, books, leather goods, luggage, cleaning materials, textiles and even Christmas tree decorations.
Probably nothing, but I'd love to see a new Triumph. TR9? Spitfire?

Yes that would be good, but not for tacky merchandise.

Surely they just want to stop others using the name or trademark? Even if they did make a new car with 'Triumph' on the back, would it really be one?

Hi Russ
How are you keeping? Hopefully catch up sometime. Are you going Prescott or Malvern

That would be where my money would go.

The other possible options are:
- A new Spitfire - a competitor for the Mazda MX5.

- It wouldn't be a luxuary or true sports car as, well the BMW brand is luxuary and sports cars. Having multiple brands fighting one another in the same segment was one of the knives in the back of the British car industry though VAG have shown you can re-badge a platform to hit different price points (Skoda Octavia < Seat Leon < VW Golf < Audi A3 but all share the same platform), so maybe a budget range based on the 1-series platform.

On the one hand it would be as real a Triumph as the Acclaim, as that was really Honda.
On the other it would be as real as the Herald/Spitfire/Vitesse/2000/Stag/TR2-7, as these were really Standards...

If it's still a Triumph if it's built after Standard bought the name why wouldn't it be a Triumph after BMW bought the name?

I think he means it wouldn't have the intangible feeling of a Triumph. For example it wouldn't rust, it would have safe rear suspension and it would be soulless wink

Can't really see BMW building a car called 'Spitfire'.

If they somehow captured that damp vinyl Triumph interior smell I'd buy it.
