Yeah indeed it is possible I've seen it done. Was a car in my old Triumph Club running a tuned 3.5L (200bhpish) thru an auto box (I think even the standard one) and it worked pretty well... think there was a LITTLE bit of fabrication involved for the engine mounts etc, but it's certainly not impossible
There were factory prototypes of the saloon fitted with both the Stag and Rover V8. Canley Classics have an example of each in their collection. See their website here.
Also there were the quite well known Del Lines converted cars with V8's, so all in all should be a pretty straightforward conversion. I'm sure Canley Classics would let you take a look at their museum cars and probably even offer a bit of guidance.
