Was in halfrauds today for something else - a pair of wiper blades if you must know, and noticed they still sell Slick50 and STP in there....

Until I got my company cars, I used to put it in my little boy racer cars, and by the time I started owning my own cars again, I'd forgotten all about it.

Was just wondereing, does ayone use that kind of stuff ? Is it really any good ? Or is it a case of steer well clear ?

IF anybody here is fully qualified to know what benefit, or harm, it might have on the internals of a Speed6 engine, I would love to know once and for all...

Cheers

agreed, probably wont harm but no benefit...google is your friend

This conclusion seems to be borne out by tests on oil additives containing PTFE conducted by the NASA Lewis Research Center, which said in their report, "In the types of bearing surface contact we have looked at, we have seen no benefit. In some cases we have seen detrimental effect. The solids in the oil tend to accumulate at inlets and act as a dam, which simply blocks the oil from entering. Instead of helping, it is actually depriving parts of lubricant"

the only thing worth considering is ZDDP if the oil you use doesn't contain it

I used Slick50 years ago on an Astra as the bearings used to rattle at startup till the oil got flowing, it claims to lubricate even if there is no oil.
The bearings stopped rattling completely at startup, so in that situation it got my vote. Have not used it since.

Years ago when I was on the spanners we had a customer that asked us to put a bottle of Slick50 in his TR6 as part of the service.

We knew this car well, it had a very sweet engine & no sign of the crank end float the Triumph 6 cylinder engine often exhibits when its getting tired.

We changed the oil using our normal high quality Penrite 20w50 and ran the car up, everything was perfect.

As instructed by the customer we then added the Slick50.

Within a few minutes the engine ran an end.

That was the first & last time I ever used Slick50.

When we striped the engine two big end shells were destroyed.

The damage to the white metal looked suspiciously like the oil had cavitated.

I strongly suspect the Slick50 had foamed causing pockets of air to be carried to the shells starving them of oil under load.

In our workshop the product was re-named st50.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

If only a fraction of the race cars that carried STP stickers in the 60's & 70's actually used it it must have been well thought of and done some good ? But of course those were the days of mineral oils, not moderm semi and fully sythetics.

Having said that the pot of "cam lube" that came with my Piper cam looked very much like STP scratchchin
