offset explanation for an idiot please
Discussion
hi all,
ive just done a search on chimaera offset as im lookin to put aftermarket 17's on.
ive found some local off a sierra cossy but they are et13.
i read an offset explanation online about zero offset etc but i didnt really get the jist of what it was saying.
i read standard offset for a chim is 35 so does that stick out more than a 13 or not as much
could someone explain it to me in laymans(idiot) terms please
thanx in advance for any help

As you've probably read, offset is the relationship (stated in mm ) between the centre-line of the wheel and the wheel mounting face. To make comparisons, you would need to know the width of the wheels (overall, not just tyre mounting points, i.e an 8" wide wheel is going to be around 9" overall width), and whether the quoted offset is negative or positive. If there is no offset, the centre line of the wheel coincides with the wheel mounting face.ive just done a search on chimaera offset as im lookin to put aftermarket 17's on.

Oh dear, this has not been a good start for you. Offset is independant of the width of the wheels.
The lower the number the more the wheels will stick out. ET13 is no use to you. Ideally you want ET25f&ET33or35r. It is easier to remember by reading ET as 'the amount pressed in' or 'einpresstieffe' - ET - in german.
FWIW most of the 17" wheels seem to be for the Corsa market and as such are 7" wide whereas you want 8 to 9" wide depending on tyre size.

Maybe I haven't quite got a grasp of it then. Surely a 6" wheel and a 9" wheel (both with the same offset) will differ in the extent to which they stick in or out by ? And don't you need to know whether the offset is positive or negative? The lower the number the more the wheels will stick out. ET13 is no use to you. Ideally you want ET25f&ET33or35r. They will and yes +ve or -ve is needed , but in reality 99.999999~ percent of wheels are negative offset except if its a wierd offroad/dragster etc rimthis site has a nice picture

Mr. Interweb suggests that most wheels tend to have positive offset, not negative. My O.Z. split rims are positive in both sizes.this site has a nice picture

Only trying to be helpful to the OP, but I bow to your superior knowledge on the subject. I guess that my car, along with every Wedge ever built, and a significant number of Mercs (similar fitment) must all in the 0.0000001% of cars with positive offset wheels. Are the wheels on your TVR negative offset?Gassing Station | General TVR Stuff & Gossip | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
