heard my first TVR last night
Discussion
Walking home from the train station last night I heard it, reverberating off the the building as it changed at the red line. Now I never normally turn around to see what car is making all the noise ( I will completely ignore it in fact) but I had too.
A chimera being driven rather quickly.
It was the most fantastic noise I have ever heard, by far the loudest car I've heard and probably one of the best too.
God I want one!!!

I think people vastly underrate noise. People will spend ages speccing this and that, but it's only that sound it makes that will consistently put a silly grin on your face. Must admit though, my heart is still with the old Rover V8s, the AJPs don't really have the same thrill for me unless being driven "properly".

Agree completely - I remember the first time I heard one at full chat was a 450 SEAC being blasted past London Zoo on a sunny afternoon in the eighties. No doubt some red braced yuppie t
V.short vid but i'm in the Chim following the Tuscan. Seeing this makes me want to do a proper film shoot/fly past as this is just too short.

From what I have heard so far, I think I prefer the sound of the 'Chims'. Are they rover V8? If so, this is a shame because I much prefer the look of the Cerbara and Tuscan. To me the Cerbara sounds too course and the Tuscan surprisingly metallic sounding?! On one bit of footage It sounded like a E46 M3
Although I would like to stress, my opinion is based purely upon my Youtube research.

My previous car was RV8 powered and now I have a Tuscan. RV8 sounded lovely at all revs, Tuscan sounds like a bag of spanners when cold and a manic sewing machine when warm and revved. TBH I prefer the noise of the RV8, but there is something brutal and animalistic about the sound of the Tuscan (mine is decatted with straight through cans)Although I would like to stress, my opinion is based purely upon my Youtube research.

Oh
the sound of a TVR
This is too how I experienced my first TVR, was walking along the street and heard a rumble behind me, turned to see what it was and a gorgeous dark green Griffith drove by, being driven by a girl with roof down, looked awesome and wanted one ever since!!
The sound of a TVR always puts a smile on my face....infact I might pop out to the garage now just to start up the Chim

Hoping the guy I saw the other night driving that Chimera is on PH.
It was a maroon/dark red colour with matching hood and cream interior, N reg I think? Hastings area.
I was quite surprised when I looked through the window and the driver was wearing a shirt with a jumper over the top?! I guess I expected the driver to be more Beast than man, wearing barbaric warrior gear and the smashed and splintered human skull fragments adorned across his metal and fur headplate! screaming his blood curdling war cry as he launched the 'Chim' forward for the next slaughtering of the mortal that should be foolish enough to cross its path!

(I know most owners will know this but it is worth repeating)
The Rover / Buick derived engine uses what is known as a cross-plane crankshaft. i.e. If you were to look at it from the end, it looks like a cross. This means the cylinder firing sequence is 'uneven' (for want of a better word). Where L=left cylinder bank bank and R = right, the firing order is something like LRLLRLRR and results in that classic V8 burbling sound at tickover. Unfortunately it needs quite a bit of crankshaft counterbalancing, which adds rotating mass and slows the engine's responsiveness.
The flat plane crank, as used in the AJP8, is, as it sounds, an "I" shape when viewed from the end. Some of the forces are more naturally more balanced than a cross-plane and so doesn't need the extra balancing weights (but can require balancing shafts to cancel the remaining ones). This results in a more responsive engine. Unfortunately what you effectively have is two 4-cylinder engines, so at idle the engine just doesn't have that sound. To get it to sing properly, you need to Give It Some Beans.

Ah, no - those would be the Griff drivers.Probably run out of medallion polish again...
Lest we forget the sound of an S6 at full chat is something pretty special too, for a range of engines at full chat check out the TDI dyno run....

The metallic sound from the Tuscans is when they've been decatted. If they have unsilcened end cans too (as most do) then they're pretty much straight through from the engine. Although I would like to stress, my opinion is based purely upon my Youtube research.

Here's what a standard exhaust sounds like from in the car (and it's a great vid too)...
