Evening all,

I made the mistake of having the roof down today and the cold weather combined with lowering the roof has resulted in a small hole in the plastic even though I was very carefull and used a rolled up towel etc. I was possibly looking at getting the plastic replaced anyway as mine has a number of creases in and has gone a little milky with age.

Who would you recommend taking the car to for a replacement plastic screen. I am after an upgraded plastic which is much more supple and less likely to crack. Any suggestions? I have heard good things about Carizma.

Check your insurance, sometimes they cover it under the glass policy, just cost you the XS then.

When mine goes again I'm toying with the idea of getting a zip out one fitted, I have investigated it in the past and it is possible.

I used Hoods Galore, Beckney Lodge, Lower Road, Hockley, Essex SS5 5LD, call Simon on 01702 562077.

They did a nice job on my Griff, after I had done a similar thing to you.

Cheers

I found I thread where someone had a zip fitted and it looked like quite a good idea, I am not sure it is for me though. I would be quite happy with the same again but a more modern supple plastic.

Cheers for the suggestion Jonny, I'll give Simon a shout. Funnily enough I have lived in or local to Hockley for over 20 years and I never knew that place existed!

Just for info, the trick is to restitch the new screen through the existing thread holes in the roof material so its an invisible repair.
I had my Chimaera repaired a few years back at a place in Cheshire.

Hi
Noticed you mentioned CARIZMA TVR - If you decide for them to do any work you won't be disappointed.

I entrusted them to do some work on my Tuscan and the job was superb - And believe me I am anal about finishing.

Can't recommend them highly enough!!

Cheers

If anything I have found mine a bit easier as the plastic is much more malleable. I still use the rolled up towel on mine to minimise the creasing when the roof is folded down.

Zip fit would be good as it could be removed before the hood was dropped. Would also allow better ventilation with the hood up. I feel a search coming on.

My rear screen has just done the same, only about a 6 inch split at the moment. I was going to try and stitch it back together myself, looks like it should be easy enough with the holes for guidance. I am just wondering what to stitch it with, I am suspecting the usual cotton in the sewing kit may not last long. Any thoughts? Should I try and find some nylon or something?

Thanks for any help, Rus

Did the same on my Chimaera.
I used a small company in Sandbach, Cheshire. (Ex RR convertible man).
I'm sure its a heavy cotton.
Can you cut a sample from where its split and take it to a sewing shop.
Yes, using the existing holes makes it as invisible a repair as possible.

Hi so called, thanks for the reply, just spotted it! I did a couple of loops with standard cotton to prevent it getting much worse, but it won't last long. Will do as you have suggested, thanks!

On the basis of Mr. Poxon's review, I've just booked into HG for a new rear screen next Wednesday.

Good strong fine fishing line. I use a light weight pipe insulation foam tube for folding onto. Stores easely in boot. Towels are for the bathroom only! Used Farecla G3 for polishing my screen.
