Hi,

I enquired about this a few years ago when I had my S3 and never got round to it, but tempted (again) to have a go with the Chimaera.

What's the minimum you need in terms of safety kit (helmet, fire suit etc), car preparation and so on to enter? Secondly, is there a handicap system or something in place - can a completely standard car on factory spec tyres and the like be competitive?

No special preparation needed - I assume that it's road legal - you will need to fit a timing strut and race numbers at the event.

All you need to do to the car is fit a timing strut and mark the positive battery terminal with red tape. The timing strut is easy to make and a lot of road cars just gaffer tape them to the numberplate. Competition numbers can either be stuck straight onto the paint or laminated printed ones can be taped to the car. Of course you can add a harness (most do) but its not required.

You have to pass scrutineering at each event which so you will need to keep the interior empty of anything loose but apart from that there is no special preparation.

You need an FIA approved set of overall, gloves and helmet. Driving boots are recommended but not obligatory.

It is fantastic fun and a great bunch of people in the championship - I would heartily recommend it. Come and join in!

Right! What's the most efficient (ie cheapest) form of heating for a garage. I am going to get the Wedge back on the road this winter!

Ahh yes, thanks for pointing that out, I forgot - probably because the battery positive terminal is not at all easy to see on the Griffith/Chimaera.

Yes - the whole thing is handicapped based on power and weight. If you haven't had your car on a dyno it might be worth doing to get an accurate figure. The handicap certainly takes the gross difference between cars out of the equation and leaves it down to the driving.

You can run on list 1A tyres (Toyo T1R etc) or list 1B (R888) with a small handicap penalty for the sticky tyres. When I switched part way through last season my handicap times remained fairly similar which would make me think the penalty is about right.

That's worth bearing in mind. I'm going to be changing wheels and tyres very shortly so - although it's a road car first and foremost and I'm not too worried about outright tyre performance - it might be worth going for some 1A compliant tyres. From what I remember that's just about any performance tyres anyway?

Yes - I think 1A covers most decent tyres that you are likely to be putting on a TVR

I've never bothered, and I've been doing the Speed Championship for 6 years. I doubt if the scrute even knows where the battery is!
