ECU reader for a cerb

i have a 1996 4.2 cerb she has a fuel/hunting problem,
Mad mark from the cerb world can over this weekend with a fault code reader program and ecu re set program for your laptop with a lead that you re wire your self with a farnell 9 way D type plug or socket on each end, all good, this works. prob is my laptop is 1 year old. it donst have a 9 way sockets/plugs only USB 2 ports.
called two ECU reader /code suppliers on e bay both said dont know what to do guv never had this prob.
so can you get a lead that goes from a 9 way D type socket (ecu on a 96 cerb)to a usb 2 port, there is a prob with back feeding infomation to the ecu iv been told!? allso the usb works diffarent to a 9 way port.
the chap in Maplins chelmsford said the man you want is on holliday.

As Mattt says you need a USB serial adapter something like this
There is no problem communicating with the ECU generally, providing you understand that the software is hard coded to talk to COM1 and you know how to set the virtual serial port to that in whatever version of windows you are using.
Both versions of the diagnostic software are available from my site here - there is little difference between them so use the new version.

I would not get a Cheap USB to serial, you must make sure it has a FTDI's chip set, else you mess up your ECU.
It's could be different with your ECU, but most ECU (esp Emerald) will specify you should only use the FTDI chip set USB to serial adaptors. they are more expensive though £15-£20 but I've been using them and for ages and not had a problem.

I would not personally use the one Tanquero showed, as it does not say what chip set it is, also its seems too cheap to be FTDIis the lead tanquero shown ok to use?

Your still need a cable though that goes from this adaptor to the ECU, all the USB adaptor does is supply your PC/Laptop with a serial port.

You really don't need an FTDI chipset for the Cerbera ECU - some people report intermittent disconnects with some leads - The one I linked to is identical to the one I have been using for several years with no issue at all.
ETA: MBE make no recomendation as to chipset.

That maybe so, but if you get the better one to start with, then it can be useful for other stuff.ETA: MBE make no recomendation as to chipset.
I do Comm's stuff at work and have used the cheaper units and they can loose data.
As Tanguero has said though if you only ever want to use it on the Cerb, then the cheaper ones are fine. I would not use one though if you need to re-flash or update the ECU.

well i did go and get the lead tanquero recommended but it would not work on my laptop try and try i did but just said cant open port ,again mad mark came over lead would not work on his laptop ,used his old 6 port to 6 port and it worked a treat,hopefully mark is going post the read outs so everyone who has a idear as how to read them can have there say,
