Village Speed Trap

Having lived for a few years in the highlands of Scotland this is something that is very different in the south (I am English and from the South East originally). In Scotland the 
seem to tolerate speed on the country roads outside of towns but are red hot in the towns and most people respect that. This means you get people actually slowing for the 30 zone in towns, driving through the towns at 30mph, then hitting the loud pedal on entering the NSL again.
IMHO this is safer than the slow a bit drive through a town as fast as you think you can get away with and then hit the loud pedal again on the other side. I must also admit I found it worked the Scottish way, made driving the country roads fun and without the traffic volume allowed you to make good progress (I always drive within reason and the speed limit of course) and overall made journeys less stressful. However I am aware that the government (or at least the last one as I haven't seen this one comment on it yet) will tell you most accidents caused by speed occur in the NSL areas.

If you think its only old people who don't like wan*ers speeding through their village then think again.So if putting a pretend speed cop in a village can stop one accident then I am all for it !

You all think you have problems. Try being a driving instructor and driving within the posted speed limit any where at any time, pupil or no pupil. I get flashed , beeped , intimidated and overtaken at every opportunity. Very few drivers on the road give any consideration for a novice under instruction, let alone me driving too and from lessons. When in the TVR i am (ahem) invisible as a driving instructor, but will always obey speed limits in rural and built up areas.
It could be that Iam getting older (no comments) but when I do get about into the country lanes whilst driving my TVR - it still surprises me how fast some of the locals wiz around the country lane blind bends, dont get me wrong I do drive as though I stole it when the lanes are clear or until told to slow down by the wife

Hardly the smartest move.I once had a guy try and run me off the road (I was on foot) - he came over a hump in the road in a 30 with all four wheels of the road. So I crossed into the road and blocked him , he braked hard and stopped abuot 10m's from me. We then stared at each other, I walked towards him, he put his foot down and drove for me! I stepped back onto the grass bank.
He apparently now can only eat food that has been through a blender ;-)

Down near work, one of the villages campaigened for the speed limit in their village main road to be dropped from 40 to 30, which was done. Then they kicked up a stink about people 'racing' through the village and wanted a 'safety' camera installed. Instead they got a copper with a speedgun for a couple of days a week who promptly nicked most of the locals. Classic quote in the local paper "Oh we didn't mean them to stop us locals..."

Very true apparently. they reckon some of the worst culprits are the locals in many cases more a touch of don't do as we do but do as we say Our village has just bought a share in one of those smiley face SID thingys as we have a long straight 30 limit going through it.
Yesterday a chav doing about 60 odd overtook a guy doing about 30, on the zebra crossing (that we got because an old dear was killed a few years ago), so what's the hope really. Just past the crossing is a busy village shop.
Oddly though, a section of road that was reduced from 50 to 40 a few months ago seems to have been very effective but it may be the islands at each end that stops the real nutters.
And no - it isn't all bikers. I would say the higher percentage of speeders/type of vehicle in our village are cars.
If we want to go to stereotypes then the mothers in their s****g great 4x4s are some of the worst.
