Just been doing an online quote and cames across this on the form

"If you require your policy documentation in Braille, please call us on....."

For a start how would I read it if I were blind and secondly what would a blind person be doing applying for motor insurance!

I guess its more of a company policy, but it made me chuckle.

The number '5' button on number pads for phones etc. has a raised dot as an aid to the blind. The number 5 on my calculator has this feature but I can't imagine how a blind person could see the disply screen.

Blind people can get screen readers, that read out the contents of a browser page to them.

But still not much point in getting insurance I would have thought.

When I first came across the raised dot on the 5 key on my shiny new calculator, I thought it was a machining fault & promptly filed it off!

I think the raised dot on a calculator is used as a locator for your finger when not wishing to observe the display.

E.G. when adding up a long list of figures it saves you from having to look over and check the display all the time thus allowing your hand to work remotely

I imgaine that PA's and secretary's use a similar system when speed typing from dictation or notes.

It's not funny, there are drivers out there suffering from such a blight, so please have a christian attitude and don't laugh at the inflicted.

Just a piece of advice for you, this specialist group of drivers can be easily identified on the open road by a small mark o the back of the vehicle saying..... Volvo.

A person who is registered as blind can still, in certain circumstances, drive a car.

And the Volvo jokes are a bit out of date. The T5 changed all that. I think that a blind person would have difficulty choosing between the Porsche off-roader, Multiplas and any Renault.

thats not just for blind people. its for the hardcore typers that stare at the screen constantly so they can re-place their fingers if they move them.

I meant how would a blind person read the sentence from the screen so that they knew to order their car insurance in braile!

'The f and j on my keyboard has that as well.'

so does mine, but there's no need to swear!!

On the Raised dot thing, I was told that telephones have a bump on the '5' key to help unsighted people find the numbers on a keypad, and also in the event of a powercut, or excessive smoke in the event of a fire, you would know where the numbers were to dial 999.

thats all very good if you know which key has the bump on it. I bet most people dont.

Infact I only ever realised that my mobile had it. Had never noticed it on anything else till it was mentioned.
