"You are most likely to feel the difference......"
Discussion
Well, old topic but I've read several differing threads on this site about whether Optimax enhances performance or not, so I thought it time to try some myself and I have to agree with what it says on their website.
" Shell Optimax is designed to give your car or motorbike maximum capacity to respond quickly, just when you need it to. You are most likely to feel the difference when you pull away at roundabouts or overtake. The more often you fill up with Shell Optimax, the better your engine should perform."
Bu@@er - Lost the back-end today pulling away from a roundabout,
not totally, but enough to make me sweat, never done that before on a dry road, or a wet one come to think of it - it had to be the petrol! The quicker response from the engine was substantial!! I'll be a bit more weary with the old right foot in the future.
I'm converted - As I'm sure many of you are already

It's not just whether the road is dry or wet - but also surface and tyre temperature, the roads round my way are bone dry at the moment but I'm getting a lot of slip (oversteer and wheelspin) the air temp is around 2degC so the tarmac must be close - just makes things more exciting...
...could also be diesel on the road or on your tyres.
The great thing about when its like this is being able to enjoy what the car can do but at much lower speeds so any resultant slides are much easier to catch without plugging holes in the scenery!
Enjoy - don't think its your petrol my friend.

I appreciate lots of things can cause the backend to swing out.
The chap I bought my car off had been running it on normal unleaded and advised me to carry on doing so. The different engine responsiveness between optimax and that was significant, this was apparent immediately, certainly on my car. I'm sure this does not apply to all, especially on a beauty like yours Nick. I suspect it would be hard to notice any difference on a new high powered car like yours, but I'll definately be feeding her optimax in the future.
Like you say, these cars are bl@@dy good fun - just need a little respect, otherwise they bite back some time

I find I get transmission shunt at low revs with it in my 400 Chim.
I think though it could be tuned to run on Opti'.
Is that right?
i think you'll find it might allready be tuned for opti, i know in my 4ltr griff handbook it says its designed to run on ron97(optimax) otherwise you might get pinking occuring, the bible backs this up as well

I don't know if it's better air up north or something but if I drive to London I need to fill up just as I arrive, if I do the same miles up to Glasgow I still have a quarter tank left!!!
Could be those crowded roads down South? as traffic jams and bumper-to-bumper
extract a heavy toll on fuel economy.

nope, my early chim seems to prefer 95 octane too.

When I picked up my 4.0 Rob ingelby said the 4.0 is ok on normal unleaded but a 5.0 needs super unleaded etc, never noticed any difference on the 4.0 (tried super but no quicker or more econmical) now have 5.0 getting close to running out could not find any super filled up with normal unleaded, fuel consumption 14.3 normally aound 18-20.

from Leeds. If I could use 1 tank from Glasgow to London in the cerb I would be laughing. A cerb as an everyday economical car, now theres a thought
