Having had my '98 Chim 450 insured with Hagerty for the past 2 years the (thankfully) limited dealings I'd had with them had been pleasing and efficient.

Then, in the wake of what had already been discussed here, it was no surprise to receive 'the' letter advising that they were unable to offer renewal terms due to "some restrictions which are now enforced". But it WAS a surprise to see that letter referenced "Hagerty Classic Insurance Renewal - Declinature".

Without wishing to appear overly pedantic, as I hadn't applied to them for anything I can't see how I could have been declined. But in future, when answering the usual question "Have you ever been declined motor insurance?" I will now uneasily answer "No".

Reading on, I saw their offer to "reccomend a third party who may be able to insure your car". So before calling the usual suspects for my renewal, I thought I'd take up Hagerty's offer of reccomendation. Well this turned out to be a broker who claimed to work with ten underwriters, nine of whom would only quote on TVRs over 15 years old (mine is nearly 12).

The tenth one, which had no such restriction, was 'unable' to offer cover!!! WHAT a waste of time!!! From hero to zero in a single letter and a couple of phone calls. frown

By the way, in case you're wondering if it's me... held full UK licence for 44 years. For last 34 years of which, no points and no convitions of any type (and before that nothing worse than SP30/etc). No claims history, max. NCD, no high risk occupation, not an actor or pub landlord and car kept in locked garage near my house. Oh, and a member of the TVRCC.... WAIT maybe that was the problem!! biggrin

Its not declined as you already have a current valid policy, they as a business have chosen not to renew as a result of a change in their business strategy. Hagerty are underwritten by Allianz who are still ensuring TVR's as they underwrite policies for Manning IIRC

Yes, I know - that was my very point - why head their letter "Declination" if they aren't declining someone.

This is all very odd as I renewed my Hagerty policy last month on a 1996 Chimaera 400. This is my third year with them.

I renewed in January but they told me it would be the last time.

Mannnings have just quoted me the same price as I paid last year with Haggerty (£242), who have declined to renew because the car is not pre 1980. The policy will be with Allianz, which is the same as what I had with Haggerty. Anyone know why Haggerty appear to be turning away business?

Has anybody actually tried contacting Allianz and asking them the best way for continuity? This certainly seems a case of brokership rather than the insurer from what I can ascertain.

Hello Nick wavey

As you know, I have virtually the same car as you and Hagerty offered me renewal (with no exclusions or time-limits visible) a few weeks ago. The premium was higher though (to around 285 from 242) so I looked elsewhere.
Eventually went with Mannings at lower cost and with track day cover and agreed valuation included (subject to photos & declaration).

Strange as both are uderwritten by Allianz. scratchchin

Shame. Hagerty were so good for a while - easy to deal with & very pleasant. Can't see why they are refusing certain people but not others.
I think Hagerty have been good for premiums in general though as (in my experience), the others all seem to be lower now than a few years ago.

Hi Mick!

Yes, I was originally with Mannings too and switched to Hagerty a couple of years ago as there was a price advantage and agreed value offered instead of track day cover which I didn't need. But as has been said, it was with Allianz, the same underwriters and for all practical comparisons, the same policy.

Spend is right - the answer to Hagerty's inability to continue probably lies with Allianz but as there are alternatives around I can't be bothered asking them what happened. NOT that I'd expect them to reveal all or actually be able to speak to someone who had the slightest idea anyway!! smile

My original post was more about how Hagerty referenced their letter and then the fiasco of their recommendation.

Nick, I was not intimating any blame. Allianz is a massive company, and may well tell you of a broker offering the simplest way to continued insurance underwritten by them?

I could understand some shenanigans from brokers, but it's just business as usual for the insurance company... ( much like the local paper shop is not going to bother Cadbury Schweppes in the slightest if it suddenly stops selling raspberry soda hehe)

smile Yes, I agree Dave. You're right and thanks for the suggestion. But unless things have changed at Mannings, continuity with the Allianz policy is available through them. However it seems there may be better out there so I'll have a phone around. I wonder what Hagerty did to disqualify themselves from offering renewal terms.. confused

It could be perhaps, that due to their recent popularity, Hagerty may have taken more than their fair share of the write-offs & claims, which seem to have been quite bad this last winter. This could have been noticed by Allianz, who have to foot the bill at the end of the day, and therefore imposed stricter T&Cs on certain brokers.

Hagerty said to me last year that they did not like insuring cars that were not older than 15 years.
The chap I spoke to indicated that they had paid out for a considerable amount of claims.

I assumed at the time that some people were buying some cars to run as a classic but were really taking advantage of classic insurance to run what some people on here would consider an ordinary car?

They did renew my insurance, but to get anywhere near to the previous years quote I had to reduce the mileage to 1500......which did not bother me. £215 FC agreed value, for a 54 year old.
At the time I was happy with the price (I only do about 1000 miles a year in the Chimaera)

The renewal should be flying through the door shortly for this year ???

But Haggerty dont pay the claims and shouldnt see much admin as a result of claims. So I cant see why they turn the business away unless their 15yr rule defines their business model.

Yes that's right but obviouly something happened to change their business model. By the way it's a "30 year" rule now - the 15 years was the rule applicable to the other brokers to whom they referer ex-clients.

You can only conclude that whatever it is, it probably came from the underwriters they use and perhaps they had more to lose by falling out with them than disappointing a few TVR owners.

I posted a few weeks back a reply from a Hagerty underwriter. It's a change of policy by them which is a shame. Can't remember the cut off date but I think it was end of Jan / early Feb.

Just renewed with Mannings. Excellent price, service and knowledge of the marque so I'd recommend them highly.

Same happened here. Haggertys cannot renew my policy, however Manning have quoted me £264. for 2k. and trackday cover etc.
oh and £100 excess.
I believe Haggerty has stopped doing their modern classic policy and now only do true classic cars and that is why some people will get insurance and some wont.
As stated above Allianz are still the insurers for both haggerty and mannings.
