Could have been a lot worse

Went out for a run in the Tuscan this morning and noticed vibrating from the rear. Thought it was the rear screen resonating at first so ignored it but it got progessively worse. Next thought was that I'd picked up something in one of the rear tyres. Stopped and checked the tyres. That was OK but decided to stop at the next tyre place and get it on a ramp. After an initial "Don't get many of these in here" It soon became apparent that all my wheel nuts were loose and in particular the rear nearside wheel was moving about half an inch. That had been causing the vibration and has actually sheared a wheel stud off in the process.
The only thing I can think of is that someone has tried to steal the wheels and after loosening the nuts either couldn't get a jack under the car to get them off or was disturbed. Either way just left them.
Pretty scarey stuff really. I'd been doing Blah mph on the M27 10 minutes earlier. Even more miffed that I've now one shiney wheel nut missing.
Guess I'll have to invest in a set of locking ones as a deterrant.

Yep that was me. Just after those nice blokes at the tyre and brake place next to Macky D's had sorted me nuts out !!

This happened to my husband once. only the gits where the garage that hadn,t tightened the wheel nuts up after doing some brake work.
He was damm lucky as his wheel bounced down the road and through a patrol crossing with kids waiting to cross.

I had the opposite problem - well known garage tightened up the wheel nuts with an air wrench and the bolts sheared the next morning - wheel bounced off and into a bus shelter (fortunately empty). Garage said it wans't them - the other front wheel was as tight as a... well it was very tignt ok?

I shouldnt name and shame so I wont But I once had poor service from a wheel shop near Southampton train station to do with locking wheel nuts. Their "emergency" support when I needed a replacement tool didnt happen at all.
Also wanted to add that locking wheel nuts wont fix your problem unless you fit lots. I have had my nuts loosened (in more ways than one!).
They lossened them all and then got to the locking one last and stopped. I didnt know and drove the car away. The same happened to me as it did to you crusty, and we are in the smae area and have similar names! Perhaps someone is out to get all the *usty's !

Same thing happened to me. All the wheel nuts removed but foiled by the locking one.
1 mile down the road, the locking nut came loose and shook off, I remember the wobbly feeling when it happened, then BANG! Running with the back wheel drum on the floor and the wheel bounced off.
When I pulled in, I looked back to see my wheel spinning infront of a parked car - it must have bounced clean over it as there was no damage to the car, so quickly put the wheel back on (luckily 5 stud wheels, so down to 4/wheel) and was away.

A jallopy I once bought had 2 different sized wheel nuts on each wheel.
Possible a good deterent to thieves, or perhaps at least a way to slow them down a bit
as they probably car a selection of tools anyway.
Perhaps 2 different locking wheel nuts on each wheel opposing each other would do it.
BTW: I bought the best locking wheel nuts I could once, and still managed to take them off with out the tool! Its just too easy.
