Anyone have an idea of cost for a complete 5.0 with supercharger inc all ancillaries from TVR power?

Dont even know if its possible without supplying the engine, I guess if not then the other option is to supply a 5.0 lump to be completely rebuilt with a supercharger added at the same time.

any ideas?

think i depends upon what you specifiy at the time, like compression ratio, do you want a steel crank etc, have a look at V8 dev to get an idea of costings of the engine part.

I think it could be done for £10K - £12K depending on your specification, but that may be optimistic! rolleyes

Your 'inc all ancillaries' should include a properly mapped ECU, including ignition and fuelling.

I would also strongly recommend that, before you commit, that you try to talk to someone who is successfully running an engine build to your desired specification.

10-12k eek I was thinking about £6k, admittedly I had no real idea just seemed to remember RV8 with tuned power to be about this figure, was some 6 years ago I had a TVR though.

Had a quick look at V8 dev. web site, maybe this as an alternative?

This full engine comes with a performance 5.2 litre long engine, high performance fast road camshaft (of customers choice) solid lifters, double roller timing chain set, roller rockers and full gasket set to finish. In order to complete the engine the front timing cover and ancillaries will need fitting from an existing engine (or can be supplied from £700) and a fuelling system connected. This engine, once correctly installed, will produce in the region of 350BHP and 380ft/lb of torque (substantially more if cammed for race). The use of extremely high quality components and very exacting build standards makes this a truly magnificent incarnation of the Rover V8 engine and is responsible for many 'grins'. The same 'full engine' conversion can be made to any of the smaller capacity engines shown here, if it is a full engine you desire then please contact us for further details.

£5,795

Exchange required

Outright surcharge £400

I thought the only way to a true 350-400 hp would be with a charger, TBO I'd prefer to not have the whine of a charger, are these figures fairly accurate do you think?

£6K - Including the supercharger?? The S/C kit alone is about £5k!

<LOL> I've got a quote sat on my desk for a 5.3 rover v8 race motor...

No supercharger, but complete ready to go just add exhaust manifolds 12v and a radiator..

it includes fully mapped dta ecu on the dyno, a dry sump and cross over throttle bodies... to you mate 14k plus vat...

when you break it down its all very reasonable there is just a lot of it !!

Thats looking at around 390 real world bhp... I've had 2 5ltr lumps over 350 so far without needing a supercharger... evil

had some interesting emails with regard taking the SC route, thanks wink

any views on the V8 Dev. 5,2 long engine listed above, seems good value when measured against some of the other figures you guys are quoting, paying what needs to be paid is not a problem wink but it may not be necessary for what I want.

not convinced £6k extra over the V8 dev engine is worth it IMO, not for an extra 40 HP and alot more hassle from what I have been told.

This isn't about huge BHP (I already have that elsewhere on the drive) just enough to thrill a little more than last time I had TVRs smile

I figure an added 70 odd HP to what I had last time (5.0, ACT plen, MA chip) and I'll be a happy man, do we think the V8D engine would achieve this?

Whats all this extra hasstle about? I've heard of people having a bit of trouble with the non-intercooled cars running best guess chips, and obviously Bluebottle has had some trouble with his crazy engines, but in the main its a pretty rock solid kit. In normal application I've heard of very few problems. Personally I wouldn't bother with a 5L+ engine if you wanted a charger. I'd go for a 4.6 or 4.8 as it would suit it better. It'll rev quicker for a start.

You could just pick up a nice 4.6 out of a written off Chim for £2-3K and slap the kit on that. With a decent ECU and setup you'd be looking at a relatively easy 400bhp for not far off your initial figure.

The problem with the 5L's are that they have a higher compression ratio so to run with a decent amount of boost you really need to rebuild it with a lower CR. The 4.6 comes at 9.35:1 as standard so you can push it quite far without needing to open the motor up. Plus of course, all of the 4.6's are cross-bolted and serpentine. My own car had no issues with detonation, even when running it up on the dyno looking for bhp and its pushing out just over 400bhp with no problems so far in around 15 months (driven just about every day and on track).

With the S/C kits available, I really don't get why you'd want to build a 5.x engine for all that cost with a motor cammed to hell to get less bhp and much less drivablility than a simple 4.6 SC??

Originaly thought the SC route would be the easiest & most cost effective way to 350ish genuine hp, was not fussed about having a SC per-say, in fact I'm not overly keen on the whine, I'm guessing it'd be more like the F150 lightning I owned in terms of SC noise rather than my SL55 (which is near on silent), stand to be corrected though.

On the messages I have had plus costs outlined by others it looks like normal aspirated is a more tried and tested route plus the V8D package would come with a warranty presumably? if I, as you say, by an old 4.6 and fit a charger, thats 3k engine + 4-5k charger = more expensive, more power than I want, an engine that could go pop any minute (unless rebuilt but thats more cost) with no warranty of any kind?

I know my original title was a SC enquiry but the subsequent posts and emails are leading me in another direction, the normal aspirated engine packages available 'new' and with warranty look quite good value to me when compared to the SC options, or am I missing something? not trying to be funny, I actually want to understand smile

Well it's all down to personal choice at the end of the day, but I'd say that a 4.6 is pretty bullet proof so long as the cam is ok. They're tried and tested engines and its pretty unlikely for one to go pop like the more highly strung AJP8 or 6 engines.

The reason I suggest the SC route is not just the power but the driveability. Mine drives better than it ever did in standard or mildly tuned guise, easily crawling along in 5th at idle in traffic with no shunting. Plus bizarrly it is now more efficient on fuel, managing 300 miles on a tank relatively easily. I'm told this is down to the charger improving the efficiency of the engine, but whatever it is its a bit fo a surprise. The problem with getting an NA engine to that sort of power is that you have to compromise on drivability as you'll likely need a fairly spicy cam profile, and higher compression would mean that you're still straining the engine, so its still at risk of going pop.

Both have their advantages obviously, but having been in a powerful NA car and my own SC450, I'd choose mine every time. Oh and there's no whine at all. Its a centrifugal charger so it works like a belt driven turbo. The most you'll get is a slight noise of rushing air as the boost builds, but I have a loud exhaust so I don't hear it unless the roof is on and the windows up with the heater/blower/stereo off.

I think the V8D claims are pretty sensible, fairly standard should be in the 350bhp ballpark. Start adding wilder cams, better ecu, maybe better induction and North of 400bhp should be attainable. Rob & co were building 400bhp+ engines years ago for racing so there is no reason to doubt they can do it again, it's just a matter of taming the manners and how much you are prepared to tolerate.. The increased capacity, better mapping (particularly ignition) all help in 'taming the beast', whoever / whatever the tuned engine supplier/spec?.

Hi all,
I tuned and fitted an MS1 ECU to Robs 5.5L that was in a TVR and that was dynod at 375BHP and 420ftlbs. Thats what I would go for, it was sensational to drive, he tells me the 5.4 is very similar. The guy who owns it keeps in touch with me from time to time and he is over the moon with it, thats 3-4 years on,
