Starting problems - two black wires from the distributor

Hi,
I have recently had trouble with an intermittent starting problem on the griff, which I finally traced to the two black wires that exit from the back of the dizzy. The problem was that these wires insulated but where touching and not sending a pulse signal to the coil.
Has anyone else experienced problems with these wires or know if the wires/connector block can be replaced as a whole unit?
