ANY TIPS FOR THE RUN TO THE SUN? (Cote d'Azur)

Hi all,

I am planning to pilot the Chimaera to the South of France in a few weeks and thought I would see if anyone has some tips?

Early ideas are to get some miles under our belt on day one perhaps as far as Clermont Ferrand then spend the remaining two days seeking out some fine driving roads.

Final destination Nice (Villefranche-sur-Mer).

Any tips for great driving roads will be gratefully received.

We've driven the Chimaeara to Villefranche sur Mer several times...you'll have a blast.

(challenge: get round the hairpin that descends to the old town without using reverse...you might need to boot it!)

Must visit the Alpine passes, and photograph the TVR taking the hairpin at Monaco!

Not sure of the timings but check out the finish date of the Paris-Nice professional cycle race. It woulfd make a lively and colourful end to your run and theres usually some TdF conntenders in there.

We did a trip to the Cote D'Azur last year and are doing the same again this summer. We thought the same as you - break the back of the mileage on the first day. We stayed near Sauxillanges (near Issoire, just south of Clermont F). Lovely Auvergne countryside but the motorways are boring . Then next day there were options - there's a cross country, more direct route but we went the longer way via the Millau bridge. Worth seeing if you have the time.

When you do get there, Monte Carlo is a must-see (IMO), Eze and Antibes are also very nice. As for driving, half an hour north and you're into rally territory (Col de Turini etc). Anywhere around Sospel, Luceram, Lantosque is good.

Fantastic trip ! as long as you don't go the first two weeks in August. made this mistake a few years ago,, , every French man, woman and child is on holiday and the roads gridlock !!!!

Finally got to the S of F and it was fantastic. stayed in the hills above Nice looking along the Var (?) valley, awesome. Go to Antibes, Nice, Ville-france, Monte Carlo etc, wonderful !!

At least make an effort to speak the lingo, they don't give you much time otherwise !

The Grande Corniche, no question. Drive into Italy on the 'coastal' motorway, then drive back along the coast road to Nice. Fabulous.

Monaco/Monte Carlo is also fun.

We'll be off to Provence again in the Tamora in the Spring, really looking forward to it.

Take the A6 from calais. About 5 hours south between Dijon and Macon come off at Beaune. Beautiful place to stay... The take the N74 to Chagny - not far. Past Chagny take the D981 down to macon, a fantastic road with the vinyards each side, roof down... It is actually not far out of the way also and runs almost parallel to the A6.. Don't forget to use the chambre d'hotes for the full experience.

I did that area last September in my Chim. Absolutley fantastic time, Monanco is superb but for driving pleasure do the Col de Turini, hairpin after hairpin, steep climbs and spectacular views. TVR's were made for roads like this although the wife got a little worried at times. It will take weeks to get the smile off your face. Go and enjoy yourself.

Me too it was very busy all over Europe this time of year so many caravans and campers out and about, The heat in a open top car can get a bit much this time of year in mid day sun as i found out.
