MOT In North Yorks

Some advice needed

My S2 is due its first MOT in my ownership this month and I was wondering whether it would be best to take it to a TVR friendly place.

I am based in North North Yorkshire near Leeming Bar.

I understand the mob in Harrogate are not recommended but who else is there (Selby?) who could give the car a good service at the same time and align the headlights are they had to be replaced.

SSCC in Boroughbridge are very good, but pretty pricey. Selby have had rave reviews from everyone who's been there.

Pricey compared to what?...you get what you pay for. They are very thorough and they give your P&J the respect it deserves when its with them.

Can't comment either way on Selby but would expect good things.

Harrogate - I must admit it's been their reputation and good service from other quarters that have kept me away rather than any recent experience..

BUT all things considered, the car should not need a TVR friendly anything to pass an MOT if emmissions are ok and they should be on a pre-cat S.

I live in Leeds and quite happily drive straight past Selby and Harrogate on my way to TrackVRoad in Clitheroe. In fact, exactly where it is at the moment for MOT and the addition of a JP exhaust...

You could always try an old TVR factory mechanic at green star in Blackpool. They do a service with a free mot on TVR's and it's not silly prices.

Depends what context you take 'pricey' as being I guess. It is expensive, but as you say, they are very good!

Depends what context you take 'pricey' as being I guess. It is expensive, but as you say, they are very good!

Service costs are a factor of labour rate, manhours spent and parts. The later varies very little.

Some folk charge a low labour rate and charge an excessive number of houre to do jobs. On the face of it, they make good garages look pricey or expensive untill you get the bill.

Others do fixed price low cost servicing and do it very badly because they can't service the cars for the price the advertise, again, they make make good garages look pricey or expensive.

So, what is expensive??

Have you tried TJ Motors in Boroughbridge? They do a good job and are quite reasonable. Not sure if he does MOTs but he might know a man that does. He's an Ex TVR Dealer Mechanic.

I always go the long way round - that's the beauty of owning a TVR for me. (also my map skills are not very good) but in all seriousness my car is a weekend toy and I still manage to do a minimum of 6000 miles/yr. Any less for me doesn't warrant having it as they are there to be driven and I am adamant this results in fewer problems and less surprises come service time.. I almost cringe when people do 1k miles in a year as I can do that just popping for a pint of milk!

I'm also a big beleiver in finding someone you trust and are happy with - if they're any good they'll treat you fairly and the relationship will be mutually beneficial.

Thanks for all the advice.

I have also found a guy in Darlington (where I work) who does a few TVRs up here (Griff, Cerb) and as he is 1/4 of a mile from work it is going in on Thursday as it turns out the MOT expired on the 18/09 (whoops. I will report back on the work done and level of competency.

I used two local MoT stations when I was in York. I found that the TVR was given a thorough going over given the age and status of the car - maybe a little tolarance but always keeping the car safe. My advise would be "go local". (Unless there is something very unusual about the car which may need "specialist" attention).
