Totally Gutted - Need help and advice PLEASE !
Discussion
Took the Chimaera out today, returning home and stopped at an island to filter in - unfortunately the Ford Galaxy behind didn't. It has split the rear end from the boot line down on lhs, and part split it on the rhs. also abrasions etc on boot edge and over width of bumper, and broken lh rear light cover. Driver wants to pay for repair privately, rather than through insurance. What I need to know, asap, is roughly how much it will cost. I do not want to delay informing ins. co., if repairs are going to be more than he is willing to pay. Any help, costs, advise, spare car would be appreciated. Just going for a sob and a small sherry whilst I wait for some replies. Thanks guys (and girls)!!
Sorry to hear that
E-mail ewlhme coachworks or pr woods some pics and they might be able to give you an estimate. would call them first though.
also Jason Webb at the tvrbodyshop some pics and he might ( i said might) be able to give you an estimate. Call him aswell to tell him he has mail.

Thanks for the quick replies, you really are a great group of people. From what you have already said, I think a quick estimate is in order, and also a call to ins. co. First accident in 35 years of motoring, and it had to be in the TVR! Only had it a month! Next question - where should I take it? I am based in Nottingham, but don't mind travelling. Sorry Ballistic - your reply was posted as I was replying, so not ignoring your comment!

A similar incident happened to me in the S in the summer.
While they may want to settle directly - you/they will be surprised at the repair costs. GRP is a specialist repair particularly in achieving a good paint finish. There are also other costs (rental car etc.) to think of.
You can still notify your insurers and mention that the the 3rd party may want to settle the claim directly (that's what I did). In the meantime I would seek estimates and present them to the insurance co. and the 3rd party.
I did this and the costs were such that the 3rd party went through his insurance.
Depending on where you are I am sure you will get recommendations about local specialists. I did not want to use the insurance co. approved repairer and they were happy for me to use someone else (DirectLine).
Good luck
Darren

Darren. With Classic Line too. Your "incident" sounds similar to mine, what sort of cost was involved, if this is not too impertinent a question?
I would be very weary about him offering to pay the damage, it certainly sounds like more than his loss in no claims bonus! hopfully you have ALL his details i would check his address out ect ect sorry to be so negative but some think similar happened to my young nephew and he never saw the b*****d again
Agreed. Don't take any chances - report it to your insurers. The cost of repairs will outstrip his insurance premium by hundreds of quid. You also have to worry about getting him to pay for the repair once its done....too risky my friend.
You have to remember too, he has inconvenieced you big time, not to mention smashing up your car. Why should you oblige him by doing him a favour?

Damage to my car was a crack down n/s/r quarter, smashed n/s/r lens, other abrasions/minor cracks across rear. Also damaged n/s/r rubber bumper and chrome insert
Total cost c.£1500 plus car hire.
3rd party had the cheek to question the quote as he thought the car was so old it wouldn't cost much (1991 S3) !!!!
It was at that point I left it to the insurance companies to sort out as he had already admitted liability.
Worse thing was that it was an MX-5 that hit me.
good luck

Fortunateley, I have been able to check (don't ask how) on the car and his address etc., and they do check out; so at least no problem there. But will contact insurers tomorrow and take photos of damage and try to obtain an "estimated estimate" at least to give him the option to pay. But I will certainly be careful.
Why should you take any chances, this driver is probably thinking it would only cost a couple of hundred quid. A couple of thousand seems nearer to the mark for a proper job done by a TVR specialist repairer.
You have to report it to your insurance broker or risk loosing cover. if you were to have another incident, and your insurance company discovered the car had been fixed previously, where would you stand.... No, I don't trust insurance companies
While you are at it (I presume he has admitted complete liability) give this company a call to get you sorted for an 'equivalent' hire car.

A mercedes drive reversed into my PARKED griff (SCuffying a wing) only just had the stone chips out 3 months previously . One front respray later and a porsche boxter for a 10 day driving holiday, (whilst being fixed)
Also, insist on an approved TVR bodyshop, local TVR dealer to you will know the good/local ones to you, don'y let the insurance company send you off to therir standard repairers. I know of a chimera on here that backend lights did not match up after something similar (went to non tvr body specialist)

Mungo is right - report it. Not only is it illegal to not report an accident, but you are running the risk of invalidating your insurance (not reporting an accident).... its just not worth it.... it might be more hassle in the short term, but at least you have a better chance of getting a good repair and making sure that you arent out of pocket too much.....
Just not worth it..

I did not know that it was illegal to not report an accident if the other party is prepared to pay for repairs, thanks for that info.

Its Not Illegal to not report an accident If no one is injured and nothing else is damaged and its not causing an obstruction. but sometimes it is good to report it just so that it is logged incase of any legal battles. So dont worry about it being Illegal.

I am so sorry to hear about this Wrinkly
I know exactly how you are feeling. I had my Chim about a month before I was rear ended and they drove off!
As yours stopped I would suggest you go to the police to report it (take your stuff as you may get asked to produce) and let the insurers deal with it as it is not cheap to repair this kind of damage.
As you are in Notts pop me an e-mail if you want to go out for orange juice
sometime OK?

Just a thought, I take it the driver gave you details of his insurance company (in addition to his name and address etc) which has also checked out? I'm wondering if he has valid motor insurance cover
Also, were there any witnesses to the accident?
To avoid any possible repercussions, if I was in your shoes I'd play safe and contact my insurance company to put them in the picture as to what has happened and what has been agreed between you and the other driver.
Personally, I do find it a bit suspicious that given we're talking about damage to a TVR and not, say, a Ford (no offence meant) that this driver wants to settle the claim privately without involving respective insurance companies.
