Radar Detectors - Any Good?

Do Radar Detectors work and which is the best type and make to get? Any comments would be welcome.

(as I am new to this forum (3 days), did not realise that there was a Search facility, so have now read previous comments, but any new ones would be appreciated)

I have a Bel 550 Euro. Gives good notice of fixed cameras. Unfortunately (fortunately?!!) It hasn't seen action against handheld radar or laser yet.
