Worrying Noises after Thrash

Hi all

I'm getting some worrying noises from the gearbox (I think) of my Chimaera. There is a slight mechanical vibration from the gearbox when stationery with changes tempo/volume depending on whether the clutch is depressed and whether I'm in gear. To be honest it sounds like something is loose and has been going on for a while. (I know, I know, I should have got it checked out ages ago but I've been busy!)

Then, on Saturday I was giving the Chim a bit of a caning as a Focus RS was chasing me. The Focus was damn fast through the corners - I was doing an unmentionable speed at one point through some fairly twisty roads and he was still closing on me! Anyway, by the time I'd finished there was a continuous whirring/squeaking sound that sounded like a dodgy wheel bearing but appeared to be affected by whether I depressed the clutch. It disappeared as I nursed the car home but I'm wondering if anyone knows what it might be?

I think it is probably wise to get Shane at SFR Engineering to check it out but would be interested to hear if anyone knows what it might be?

I'd go along with that. May as well get the disk replaced at the same time IMHO.

Would not like to comment on the cost for TVR, but local garage fitted another gearbox and new clutch for daily driver Golf GTi for £200, including clutch plate and bearings. The gearbox I bought my self.

If it is just the thrust bearing then don't worry about it - mine's been rattling a smidge for 30,000 miles (yes - that long). The car has now done 54k and the clutch is still fine ... I'm waiting for it to conk out now I've said this though.

When we're talking thrust bearing here, are we talking about the clutch release bearing? And if so, 750 smackers Steve??? for a plate & bearing??? Am I missing something?

Or are we talking about an actual gearbox bearing in which case ouch!

750 is for a clutch change. Rough estimate. Includes VAT. Most of the cost is in labour to drop the box and do all those silly things that have to be done. The clutch bits are around 250-350 ish depending on which flavour of clutch has been fitted. You won't necessarily know until the old one is out. Worth changing the release bearing and release fork as the forks do wear and I have even bent one... The Heavy heavy heavy duty clutch was too strong for it and the fork bent so Tower View strengthened one for me.

If the box is being dropped to sort out a thrust bearing, it is worth looking at the clutch and considering getting that done at the same time.
