Just how much extra power would they give over an average standard 500 (280bhp ish at fly), and what extra bits would you need to buy and fit over and above std 500 kit to make it go, if any?

The question is so general it's impossible to answer. I suggest you give V8D a call and tell them what you want to achieve, and they can advise on spec and price.

i have but they haven't replied as yet because it is the weekend... I was keen to hear from someone who might have had such an engine fitted, and I guess they would have an idea?

They might have an idea about *their* engine, but the combinations and variations in build specs are almost limitless and until you get a detailed spec together it's impossible to give a meaningful answer.

Well that was part of the question, but I will wait for the company to get back to me

My 500 engine with MC1 cam and everything else standard made 266 bhp IIRC. Rob said that was a good result for the spec, so I guess it's upward from there depending on what else you do.

Was that at the wheels, or flywheel. What was the max torque ? smile

Flywheel, torque was something daft like 325ftlbs. I did post the print out up, maybe Sept/Oct 07

Interesting... seems to be standard-ish BHP, but very much higher than normal torque.

Which V8D block was that?

I've test driven a Griff with a 5.1 V8D bottom end which had just been run in, after the previous 500 crank had snapped. Certainly felt more powerful than a std 500.

The induction system from filter/hoses to trumpets, inlet manifold & cylinder head porting etc. is what makes the big numbers.
The bottom end does'nt really make much of a difference to this, except that properly balance internal parts and lightened components will make the engine more responsive on pick up (this will make a minor difference to max power, but no where near what fettling the top end will do).
If you are thinking of having V8D , John Eales etc build you a bottom end, you need to decide what you want from it long term. ie. are you looking for just a good 500 putting out what the factory said it should, or do you intend to progress from that to bigger numbers? in which case you may need to think about different internal components to future proof your engine for these later mods.
Your financial budget will dictate most of this, along with discussion with the engine builder.

Like for like 5.0 vs 5.0 will not make much difference..

But if you are going to the expense then upgrading to a bigger capacity 5.2, 5.3 etc will give power gains - as will a slightly higher CR.

Best was way to think of a bottom end - is building it to cope with the power the top end can achieve.

Not a lot of point in spending loads on H beam rods, forged pistons, full balance if you are going to put a stump puller of a cam shaft and bog standard inlet system..

If on the other hand you are installing a crazy cam (M 256) solid lifters, 3tiple plenum etc.. the you need the bottom end to handle the extra power for longevity.
