Wondering if anyone has any bright ideas, cause im a bit stuck.

Just taken out a classic car policy with Hagerty for the Tuscan, but only at the end of the call did i realise i may have made a mistake! The price was excellent, £440 on drive and about £100 off that if i manage to put my motorbike somewhere else and use the garage smile

BUT...unless i come up with a plan im going to lose my NCD?! A classic policy doesnt use them as as such i will lose them....I have around 7 year protected, but i have the use of the bike and my wifes Rav4, so dont need another policy.

is there anything i can do to prevent losing my no claims discount???

I plan to keep the Tuscan and have no plans for another car at the moment but dont want to just throw them away...

Why will you lose them? Just because you don't use them on a policy, or continually accrue them doesn't mean you lose them. I spent 8 months with 3 years NCD not being used on a policy, then in January I started using them again.

Do you automatically lose it? IIRC when I went on a govt car scheme (their insurance) I was able to keep my NCD providing the gap was less than 2 years. That was a few years back though.

How about asking Hagerty? Or, maybe a mainstream insurer.

I thought they had to be continuous or you lost them...

Obviously i will get proof from current insurer and there will be the two other policies im using, the one with Hagerty and my wifes...so provided i dont claim on those (touches head / wood) then i suppose technically i have still had no claims.

So maybe im worrying over nothing then?

I have just moved over to Hagerty and have 9 yrs NCD previously protected.

Ruth from Hagerty told me they will put the NCD on hold and if and when I move away from them they will show I still have the 9 years.

Obviously they will not go up while being insured by Hagerty but I will not lose them either.

Worth a phone call though to put your mind at rest, after all I found them a friendly, helpful and professional outfit. thumbup

From what I gather you do lose your NCD if you are not insured using them after a period...... however I have heard confilicying reports ranging from 1 yrs - 2 yrs (used to Classic Car insurance... but the realised I love the car to much to be limited on small mileages)

somewhere along the line of gaining mine the paer work went astray, however thankfully sunninghill mirrored my company car no cclaims/crashes for 9 yrs........... not sure what happens if i want to move next year though

I think you can have a 2 year gap, but with hagerty I sent them a copy of my prevoius insurance so they could hold the No Claims in case I move to someone else.

Pretty sure it is a 2 year gap also.

I have heard of a few poeple getting round this by insuring something really cheap which they may or may not even own, like a 50cc moped or at least the plates off one!

I had my Tuscan on a classic policy and even the Sag until the renewal came round and my NCD is still in tact.

I do not see how you could loose it it is just not relevant to a classic policy also your claims history on the classic policy will affect any future insurance. If you are worried as an insurance company for their policy on the matter.

When I worked at at Norwich Union (many years ago to be fair), it was always 2 years if the NCD was held elsewhere, or we would usually allow 3 years if the NCD was accurued with a NU policy.

yes

Or a shed for when you need more boot space or have to park in a dodgy area... I wouldn't want to stick a bike rack on the back of the TVR. wink

When I ran the Wedge as my only car for four years (on a Classic Line policy that didn't use NCD) I sent my proof of NCD to the insurance company. They kept it "parked" on that policy until I needed it again. If I hadn't done this it would have timed out. Just give Hagerty a call. If it's still doable I'm sure they will oblige.

SORTED! thumbup
Thanks guys, hadnt realised this could be done, but it can, and now has been so i am a lot more comfortable....they are holding my no claims stationary for the duration of the policy, will then provide written proof of no claims at the end (provided i dont make any of course wink

Hagerty were half that of the best i could get with a 'standard' policy...quite amazing really!

I would double check with Hagerty if I were you.

It used to be a condition of their insurance that the car they're covering is a second car.

You must be insured on something else, or at least recognized as the main driver.

This is definately what my current Hegarty policy (and the renewal notice says) - so I'd be careful/double check.

When my wife and I only had one car we used to alternate main driver each year and that kept both the NCDs valid - we both had accrued max NCD protected

This was something I got caught out with when I had my 400se on the road.

I had a classic policy with a 5000 mile a year limit(not Hagerty). At the time of taking out the policy I had max NCD which I asked to be protected.

However when I came to make a claim due to a bonnet bolt breaking..... resulting in me watching my bonnet sail over the top of the car yikes.... I was informed that there was no such thing as protected NCD on classic policies & as a result I lost all my NCD entitlement when it came to renewal time.

I did argue the point with the insurance company as I had not been informed by the broker & could not find anything in the policy document that stated the risk to my NCD...I complained to the insurance ombudsman but that got me no where furious

So, check, check & double check readit

as i said, i have a motorbike i commute on, thats my daily transport, and i share another car with wife, the tuscan is in fact the third 'car' as such.

Also, its quite clear to me regarding the NCD, they hold it, but it doesnt build, and if i claim, i lose it, simple as that.
