Man dies in head on crash
17:01 - 09 April 2009
POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a fatal car crash.
A man died after his bronze TVR was involved in a head on collision with a silver Mercedes just after 8.30am yesterday (Wednesday).
The man, in his 40s, died at the scene on the B651, half a mile north of the junction with Whitwell High Street.
The other driver, a man in his 60s, had to be cut free from wreckage by the fire service. He was taken to Lister Hospital with minor injuries.
Ambulance crews from Letchworth GC, St Albans and Stevenage were alerted and the Hertfordshire air ambulance scrambled.
Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson who attended said: "On arrival a man was being cared for by three members of the public, who were passing by at the time of the crash. The man was in a critical condition and following extensive treatment by a doctor and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene."
He commended the members of the public who helped before the arrival of the ambulance crews. "All three were most helpful and did everything they could before the emergency services arrived. Their help was very much appreciated," he said.
The police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the crash or the cars prior to the accident. The TVR was travelling north and the Mercedes south.
Anyone with information should call PC Hollingsworth on 01707 354027.

That's my route to the office every morning - terrible news.
I must say that the route is narrow and windy, if someone coming toward you slightly over your side & too fast then this problem is going to happen - easily done I'm afraid.
Amended as my spelling was terrible!
