A New Way Home
Discussion
OK, pick my Chim up Monday in Surrey. Suppose I could just drive on two roads to get home to Peterborough, the M25 followed by the A1.
Can get home in about two hours that way.
Quick but dull.
Or, I could go on some strange route, M25, then the M40 up to Silverstone direction, then a quick blat under the M1 into the edge of Northampton and home that way on the A45 or A43. forget which.
Or could go anti-clockwise from Surrey and then through the Dartford Tunnel, round the M25, miss the M11 and go up the A10 to Royston – A14 etc, then through Ramsey and home that way.
Or does someone know a good road I don't to get from Surrey to Peterborough midday on Monday? Some route that'll give the Chim a good test, A roads, B roads etc – not bothered how long it takes, but don't want to go to via Swindon ideally ...
Mike
Oh yeah, and don't get any South Circ/North Circ ideas either
Don't want to be testing its 'stuck in traffic' capabilities just yet

If you go via Royston, pick up the 1198 (I think) to St. Ives, then pick a silly road from there to P'boro.
Mind you, those bloody fen roads out Ramsey/Whittlesey/Chatteris way can be quite a handful in the tiv, having been left in a state that tries to throw *any* car into the ditch...
Take it easy out there!

Mike,
Come up the M25 and have a coffee with me at Heathrow before setting off on the rest of your journey - we could probably get you a few more meets between Redhill and Peterborough and you could show everyone the new car and meet some Pistonheads people as well!!
(Saw your car yesterday by the way when I picked my cerbera up - looks lovely!!)
Come on you guys - anyone else available??
Mike - Leave the Radio off and Enjoy!!
All the best

I try not to go to too far East of P'boro at all, especially not Whaplode St. Catherine and round there ... you may never return and if you do you've married your cousins auntie and have one eye in the middle of yer head ...

Neil, see my email about Monday – I'll come round the M25 to you if you give me a number.

A10 - Harlow - Buntingford - Royston, when you hit Royston, you want the 1198 towards Bassingbourn, that takes you past Bassingbourn Barraks, through Caxton, Papworth and Godmanchester then on to St Ives. When you hit St Ives, jump on the A14, those roads from St Ives to P'Boro are murder, My dad has stuffed countless cars on those roads!! (Most of them have been Ovlov's)
The A10 from Harlow past Buntingford is Dualled and throttle just falls to the floor (Was a passenger in a Griff down there) Awesome!! Only advice is the A14 is plagued with the new Truvelo Speed Camera's!! Especially just after St Ives, Hundreds of the wee F*****s!!!
If you take that road have fun, no real problems with regard falling off the road.
Happy Blasting!!!
Just to add to the thread.
I'm in Wimbledon, so if you are passing, then you are more than welcome...
The A43 off the M40 past Silverstone used to be a great road, but now Northamptonshire has adopted a silly camera policy I dont think its much fun anymore, added to which, the road is being ripped up for the bypass.
Matt.

Mike,
Congrat's.
Depends how out of the way you want to go but..
Come off M25 onto M40.
Come off M40 at Maidenhead / High Wycombe
Round HW, heading ultimately towards Buckingham (going round Aylesbury ring road), A4010, thru Princess Risborough towards Aylesbury, then A413 out of Aylesbury towards Buckingham.
Then from Buckingham, A422 to Old Straford (big roundabout with A5,A508 etc).
Head up A508 towards Northampton.
Go round Northampton on the A45.
Follow the A45 out to Thrapson then A605 to Peterborough
The route from HW to Buckingham is a cracker on a nice day. I often use it if I'm going down to Oracle in Reading (on the way back or if I have time)!!
Enjoy

Thanks guys – still mulling it over ...
Steve, I used to go over the top of MK (where the concrete cows are), then through Stony Stratford and Deanshanger?
Think that's about the same area.
All depends what the weather is like really.
Dry – longer route and vice versa obviously!

Mike congrats again Monday will come round soooo quickly, re the M25 if its bad you could spend 2 hours just getting around it

Don't really know the rest of your route but I will second that the A43 around silverstone is down to one lane for road works and full of bl**dy large ramps and pot holes (brought my V8S back that way a few weeks ago) it is also completety rigged with cameras when every it seems like a good overtaking spot as well...avoid.

Quite true. The Chatteris - March road must be a 3 mile straight at least, unfortunately the local council appear to have laid it over a herd of camels on siesta, (you never know what you might find in them there fens). It has so much subsidence, my S3 grounds out at any speed over 50! Having said that Dave Wallis from Tower View claims an indicated 150 mph (speedo apparently was reading 20 mph high) along that road in an original V8 Griff. I sure would have liked to see that

Yup, thats the route.
Nice twisty bits between Aylesbury and Buckingham on A413. Got in a race with a Scooby the last time a went round there. Needless to say the Scooby won

Steve
Depends on how much time you have.....
M25 to M4
West on the m4 and into wales, up the back roads to cricceth (not sure about the spelling), past Bala and across to the M6, up to Kendal, left towards ambleside, over the Kirkstone pass, along Ullswater, bak to the M6 at Penrith, zoom to Glasgow, up to Fort William via Loch Lomond and Glencoe, scream across the country to the east coast, down through the Edinburgh and the borders (watching the cameras), a blast down through the Yorkshire dales on the little roads (watch out for mud on the road and tractors) and gently down to Peterborough on the A1 so that you can both cool down a little.

Enjoy your first trip, and welcome to ownership.

Where in Surrey are you picking it up from? If it's anywhere near Guildford join up with the A272 by going past Fernhurst's & follow it across thru' Sussex & Kent. Then (boring bit) take the A21 up to the M25 & the tunnel. The 272's a top road, V.popular for bikes in the summer - watch out tho' 'cos plod knows this all too well!
One of the previous threads mentioned Thrapston. If you end up near there feel free to drop by and see me (I live there). I can show you the sort of Chimaera you'll be glad you didn't buy....
Hang on. Monday. Oh - I'm in Venezuela. Hmm. Maybe next time. You sound like you're in my neck of the woods!

Agree entirely about the A272. It's even got overtaking spots too. Makes it a joy to drive to Fernhurst from where I live (Lewes, near Brighton).
