Just a quick question as ive not been around many of these engines, mine seems a bit lumpy on tickover, with the odd stumble..... everywhere else in the rev range is smooth so not sure if its like every other one out there or not? recently replaced plugs, although they have been flooded once on a poor start, leads, cap and rotor arm,all genuine lucas items.... checked the plug extensions yesterday and they are all comparable resistance wise.... engine is pretty standard apart from a cam change to a 218 approx 10k ago,and the precats removed, runs very strong otherwise.....

Have you cleaned the stepper motor?

Can also be due to any slight exhaust leaks which can upset tickover.

The 218 is reckoned to be one of the milder cams with a good idle at the expense of top end power so don’t think you can blame that. Don’t think you can blame the stepper motor as that simply controls the idle speed. It would be helpful to get it on an exhaust gas analyser (try asking at the local MOT place). You would then have a clue as to what is happening. As a starting point check the AFM connections, plug leads and shrouds and the coil connections. Have a close look at the coil to see if it appears to be leaking oil. Could be one of the lambda sensors is a tired and switching too slowly. Does it smell rich at tickover Even when warm ? If so perhaps worth checking the temp sensor.

Will check the above, though the temp sensor was replaced when the cap.rotor and lead's were done as a precaution,.... its more of a idea if the bigger capacity engines are supposed to be smooth on tickover im concerned about, the bible reckons not but ive nothing to compare to..... its a pig to start without throttle which is not right ,but once started its absolutly fine....

Edited due to beer induced spelling.....

Don't forget there are two sensors, one for the guage and one for the ECU.
