I am always reading "put down" comments for the young lads in their "crashed into Halfords", big tailpipe 1.2 hatchbacks. Can't anyone remember being a teenager. Insurance is a killer to the finances of most teenagers but they still want to feel as though they have something which looks and sounds the business. They are the upcoming generation of PH'ers. I look back at myself and remember the things I thought were cool at the time and now....

Well, I'm 38 and I do look at some cars and think WTF but lets not be too judgemental.

LOL, I know what you mean as a youf', I was trolling around in an Inca yellow Triumph Dolomite 1500. It had exra spots on the front, a wooden steering wheel, stainless wheel trims, I'd chopped 1.5" out of the gear lever and changed the badge on the back to 1850 HL (cheapest engine mod in history!) But, at the time I thought it was the mutts nutts. biggrin

It looked a lot like this one, but with more lights, black interior and steel wheels - I couldn't afford the Sprint alloys. cry

I admire the enthusiasm.

But I admire the young lads with enthusiasm and a bit of taste a whole lot more. There are some young PHers on here I've met who genuinely give me hope for the next generation. yes Mad keen on driving. Mad keen on how to make their cars drive better.

Nothing wrong with being keen on stereos. But that's not a "PH" ethos.

Come on! We all have some motoring horror stories in our past. At my age, nearing retirement, with the desire to belittle the hot hatch brigade fading gently, I've got to say that I can see myself as a kid in what they do. I can look back with acute embarrassment to my late teens/early 20s but d'you know, I wouldn't have changed a thing.

I was a follower of some awful fashions and once, when walking down my street for a night out on the town, and old boy (somewhat younger than I am now) looked at me and shook his head in despair and the thought that went though my mihd was, Great. I've obviously got the look I was aiming for.

Couldn't agree more. If you have any doubts get to a few PH meets instead of or as well as TVRCC. Typically a much younger group, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their cars and driving, and keen to learn too.

I started my 'performance' cars with a Corsa 1.4 SRi. 90bhp, and group 4 insurance. Perfect.

It's very easy to become judgmental & trump the stereotype of the current 'yoof' They are but the next generation of up & coming and hopefully not to judgmental Ph's.

I'm 37 and my 1st car was a 1980 Ford Cortina Mk 5. Over the course of it's life with me it was:
Lowered
sprayed in grey prime (loved the rough & ready race car look)
Rear lights tinted dark
Ashley exhaust fitted (modded by me with a Cherry bomb)
Sierra XR4i alloys
K&N filter
Big stereo (You know, with whacking great speakers screwed to p/shelf)
Hand painted flames on side (THIS WAS A VERY SHORT TERM..experimental.. THING..) frown

So.. i agree with OP, they are not to be so lambasted, were we not once as they were?

Of course, if they drive like twunts anywhere near you - rip them a new ass*ole!

rofl Derek. You and me both.

Like I say: some of the young PHers give me hope. The world can't go to hell in a handbasket whilst the younger generation still care. yes And that's a general statement - not just about cars.

I had a Ford Cortina 1600GT (Couldn't afford the E) painted in bronze and with a complete furry interior including the dash and parcel shelf and dice

Then I got sophisticated and got a Capri in black with rostyles and black interior. Still have a photo of the old girl somewhere.
It was only an L or GL spec though if I remember right.

And on the fashion front, I can remember having white shirts with gold and silver thread in them, and a pair of Italian white leather shoes cost me a weeks wages with matching belt

I had a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 sport, I stuck some alloys and twin tailpipes on.

I then had a mate make me up a stainless steel cover to replace the plastic one, it was a fantastic piece of workmanship.

My plans were

Lower it
Induction kit
Samco hoses
Superchip

hehe

How embarassing

My in-laws to be (at the time) used to make me push it down the road before starting it, because it was too loud laugh

Thankfully, my girlfriend (now wife) was more sensible, and prevented me spending any further money on it.

I was fortunate and could afford the extra £50 or so for the 1600E ( Gold) I really liked it until an unisured driver crashed into me and it was written off.

Now I have a TVR and most of my friends , family think I have returned to those days.
Personally I like to think I never left them . biggrin

I had a lovely Citroen AX GT, lowered, big bore exhaust, 4 spoke alloys (everyone was into 3 spokes at the time so i thought i'd be different) and oligatory K&N air filter. It was an excellent little car, a right little go-kart.

For me it was MK4 and MK5 cortinas.

I had a 2.3 GLX with a black painted rear panel, cruise lights, (a sidelight bulb installed into the indicators) and black fibresports headlight perspex covers.

Oh how I laugh now.

PO red Viva HC 1256 with white standard wheels (painted with a brush and Dulux gloss). Lurid green fur on parcel shelf with the obligatory big speakers and a couple of fog lights mounted high up and wired to the brake lights (not so daft in hindsight wink). Four cheap as chips driving/fog lights mounted 2 up 2 down on the front bumper and furry seat covers.

Traded in for a beautiful standard Mk2 1600E Cortina in fern green - I still wish I'd kept it.

I had these when I was a teenager

I dont think I have ever had the urge to stick bits of plastic to a shopping cart. I put a body kit on my twin turbo supra and regretted it although I had to get it out of my system and it had the power to back it up.
