I have excessive play in the power steering rack of my 1997 Griffith 500.
I am told that the rack was manufactured by TVR but I have my doubts - I would have thought that it was a proprietary rack from a major manufacturer.
Does anyone know where a) I can buy a new one, or b) where I could get mine refurbished ?

No they were specials made for TVR.

TVR themselves are refurbing and supplying new ones (new via the Multipart agreement I assume) Refurb cost is on a unit per unit basis I understand and will be done by the guy who built them in the factory. I'll find out who you need to contact.

A brand new PAS rack without exchange is £899

If its play at the track rod arms that will not involve changing the whole rack, and can be changed in situ wink its very unusual to have play in the rack and pinion assy itself unless its absorbed dirt via torn gaiters etc.

You say that, but there is a lot of people who do get their racks refurbed. I do wonder if there is a lot of mis-diagnosis on this.

A rack and pinion is a rack and pinion, the only time i have known one to wear is water/dirt ingress or a complete crap quality part(not in the TVR case)most common failureson rack units are worn tie-rods/track rod arms and internal seal leaks or rack/piston seal leak external, well it is once its filled the rack gaiters to there full capacity thumbuphttp://www.clever-trevor.net/part/57/track-rod-and...

Someone on here said that Ford Focus ones fit the PAS rack model too smile cannot confirm that though.
