Gear box problem

I posted this in here as some chimaera owners may be able to help as well as Griff owners.
My 92 Griff (SD1 gear box) is sometimes a bit tight going into 4th gear although this gets considerably worse when the car is hot.
Today I took it for a hard blast up the motorway (approx 40 miles and when I got back into town, going into 4th was a real pain. It went in, but I had to give it a hard yank (no pun intended).
This sounds expensive. Anyone any ideas as to what it could be and why it is worse when hot?

That kind of thins sounds like the synchromesh collapsing. It happened on an S2000 I had, same symptoms, couldn't get it into gear and than couldn't get it out if I did manage to get it in. Fnar.
Get down to the dealers. They'll check the gearbox oil for metal particles (a sure sign it's knacked). It won't get better by itself.

Jamie, sorry to hear about this, would guess it's the syncro going,going,going,gone. In other words it ain't going to get better - worse each time.
Have you checked the level of oil in the box? I had an overdrive in a Volvo that was really sensitive to levels of oil - slightest drop in level and no overdrive.
On a brighter note, SD1 boxes must be everywhere, if the ratios are the same you're laughing. On the other hand a recondition of your box might be a better route.
Give Peninsula a bell, they might be able to help/give an idea of cost.
What you doing over the weekend? We could meet for a second opinion at the Waterloo????

this weekend I'm affraid, the in-laws are visiting. next time you get a chance have a look in the footwell and check to see if there is any sign of clutch fluid leak as it could be the master or slave cylinder leaking, with either not working its difficult to engage fourth and does feel like a gearbox fault.The seal kit is about £6.50
