Hi all,i'm looking for recomendations for someone to replace my outriggers on L110,only i dont just want a std replacement.
They have not long been replaced, but have been very badly done, and as such are unsafe. The problem is that i want a body off job,so the car can not be put on a 2 poster ramp. Also,i would like the powder coating re-done,and also being a recent job, apparently, this will not be easy to remove by the normal methods?I can consider removing the body myself, and then just taking the chassis to someone, but i would like them to be able to deal with all the aspects,ie welding,blasting/powder coat removal and new powder coat.Ideally i would like a drive in/drive out job,but i fear the price might be prohibitive.
I also wondered if some of you are preferring other finishes other than powder coating? If so i'd like to hear about these.
This absolutely MUST be the last time we have this done,i simply cannot afford any more bodged work!frown
I'd value anyones recommendations or otherwise, and constructive opinion would be very welcome.
Cheers,Mike

Mike, is the rest of the chassis bad enough to need the body off?

Can you weld or get a local welder?

Try speaking to Richard Podgson of TrackvRoad.
Seen their outrigger replacement work and it was an outstanding job. Very professional high quality work and some stunning stuff done with powder coat on engine components as well as chassis.

A lot of the local Tuscan Challenge guys take their cars there.

I have taken both my Chims to Richard Thorpe at RT Racing in Sheffield and found them to deliver an great service.

Drive in / Drive out full chassis jobs: complete strip down, bead blast the chassis, graft new chassis tubing where needed, bead blast again to gain a key then re-powedercoat then rebuild the car.

Ring him for a deal. Wouldn't risk taking my car anywhere else. They have been doing them for years.

They also do full chassic conversions to take different angines and drivetrains etc. The fully monty!

RT Racing, did a good job sorting my outriggers and treating the chassis about 6 years ago, outriggers still perfect and have only recently needed to touch up the paint on the chassis.

Dulfords,

they 5-6 of these a year atleast. Infact they've just done mine along with dropping the seat. Fairly local too.

I saw that seat lowering excersise on the ramp last time I was down there...could be an "interesting experience" next time you visit the kitty litter wink (mind you there was still a big hole in the floor with the bottom of your seat hanging out of it when I saw it..silly) Glad I'm a short a.r.s.e don't think I'd fancy my rear that close to the deck

That's bad news Mike. You're not having much fun with this are you?
Can't be much help here but good luck anyway.

My god it is a LONG time since I have frequented the TVR area!

Mike ,just do it yourself, all you need to do is drop the exhaust off (if there is and engine in it?) then remove 28 bolts and jack the body up. You can go about 8 - 10 inches without the loom restricting you.

Personally I would never let anyone else touch my car (unless really pushed for time or loaded) - why would I want anyone else to do it, when 1) it will really cost and 2)if you do it yourself "You KNOW HOW WELL IT IS DONE!"

Once up on stands just cut it all out and replace it - it is only bits of tube and flat plates - they were built well but typical of TVR the way they last once out the door is a total JOKE.

Mine had the whole lot done just because I was doing the driveline swap it was in great nick but really starting to flake. they need to be wire brushed every 2 - 3 years and a few dyas of lying on your back repainting if driven at all normally (if not they they just turn to dust like an old Alfa!!) Makes me laugh the people that buy these things not realising the horror that can exist under a plastic shiney body (not you) but the first 1 or 2 owners - they are terrible cars if not kept in a heated garage at all times (unless out for a blast).#

Is the engine / drive train in and running yet?

Hi Jon,

Getting the Elephant finished then will build something to race. Possibly HSCC or might even build a hillclimber.

Eitherway, whatever we do RT Racing as always will be doing the chassis for us.

Did I mention how fabulous his chassis work was Jon? hehe

Thanks to all for the replies,it's much appreciated smile.Just to reiterate though,it isnt just the normal outrigger replacement i'm after.I need them replacing, but then also the chassis blasted and re powdercoated.I cant weld,so this bit needs to be done by someone who can, though i could get it down to the bare chassis at a push.
I've made a note of the contacts mentioned so far,and i'm following these up.
Please keep it coming with any other options if you know of someone who can do the whole process to a good standard.
Thanks again.Mike

Thats what Thorpy does at RT Racing. He will take the body off, strip the chassis, bead blast the chassis (to see where the rot really is) replace and/or graft any tubes where needed, then bead blast the whole thign again to gain a key, then powdercoat the chassis. I thnk he has a choice of coatings now as well.

Thorpy is the man...

Whats up with the Spormotive stuff Mike, I'd have thought they were a bit closer to you than us lot this way?. I would certainly prefer items made on a jig rather than cobbled up in-situ? (no slight intended - Sir Richard prob has jigs as well)

Interestingly isn't it Sportmotive who also have championed two pack paint as an alternative to powder coating? I can see this being easier to get a finish round bush/bolt holes and possibly getting better etch primers & rust preventative undercoats?

Try giving Martin a call at the TVR Centre 020 8440 6666. If you really have a nice car and the only real issue is the chassis, primarily the outriggers then perhaps you should consider a new chassis. If you are going to spend money then that way it may cost more now but would add value to the car.

I'd certainly go down the Sportmotive chassis if my outriggers were in a bad way... Just build her up onto a new chassis, can't imagine it's that much more of a job than a body raise.

I delivered my griff chassis and many other parts to Topcats in Aylesbury who cut off the outriggers and replaced them with a high grade steel. They then organised a factory sand blasting and high quality nylon coating, which appears to be extremely durable and of a high standard of finish. The cost was in the order of £1350ish, but this finished at about £5000 in total as I replaced pretty much all but drive chain elements.
It is now better than new and I would recommend doing the dismantle and rebuild to most. It was very enjoyable and I now know the car inside out.

Topcats were very helpful and approachable through out the refurb and I would certainly recommend them if you consider going this route.
