Anyone sold their TVR to France ??
Discussion
Yeap, my Griff is off to Germany, payment no problem as sterling cash when the bank was open :-)
Buyer wired a deposit to hold the car, which cleared in 48hrs, without even seeing the car - asked a million and one questions though plus extra photos etc
Strength of the Euro is paramount at the moment.
Sorted

When I bought mine from a PH ad I phoned the seller, asked the usual things that were anwered convincingly enough for me to view the car, liked it, left a few hundred quid as a deposit to secure the deal and returned a week or two later with a big stash of poundage. Simple enough I'd have thought.

Good luck selling to France as most TVR are un-registerable here
Thats what concerns me !! A lot of people say that English cars can't be registered there but they still seem to want to buy !!
Furthermore, many models were never presented to the French administration for type approval so they are effectively 'unknown'.
The models that are likely to work are the Chim models from 94-97 (regulation changed in 97) and some Griff 500s.
Problem is also that an EU certificate of conformity will be demanded to register a car. This must be supplied either by the manufacturer or the national distributor. Neither exist anymore.
There have been many stories on the TVRCC France forum where members have purchased UK cars and given up trying to register them and had to re-export them.

I sold my Griff to a very nice chap who lives near Paris.
In terms of money he came over to view the car and left a hefty deposit in cash (albeit €). When he had sorted out some admin issues he sent the exact amount in £ from his account to mine. This way I was guaranteed the exact £ agreed price. I returned his € to him when he collected the car. His bank was Societe Generale and mine Barclays (not that that should make a difference).
I then did a few things for him - bought a private plate, got some plates made up, taxed it and waxolyed it, which he then paid for, again via a bank transfer in £.
He then collected the car about 6 weeks after the money was with me. There are obviously significant elements of trust involved here.
The buyer was fully aware of the complexities regarding registering the car in France. We both explored the Certificate of Conformity route but , as has been stated, this is a dead end. As a result my purchaser has set up a Company registered in the GB so that the car retains its registration here. He can then use it in France but needs to ensure he complies with UK tax, MOT and Insurance requirements. This is only a short/medium term solution whilst he explores 2 other avenues.
The first of these is that it is possible to register the car in France and the process differs Departement by Departement. It is onerous and could take up to 8 months but can be done via lengthy bureaucracy, tests, checks etc. Secondly he is exploring the EU legalities of the current system with his solicitor with a viw to bringing a case before the EU Courts as the French system effectively attempts to block imports which is precisely what shouldnt be happening in a free trade/common marketplace.
If these fail I guess he will continue the registry in the UK or sell!
Cheers
Graham

The legalities are quite clear. Any car that complies with the appropriate EU directive and has an EU certificate of conformity has be imported anywhere and registered without problem. The trouble was that TVR exploited UK only 'national deviations' to the applicable directives to get the cars approved. Therefore they are not recognised as true EU products and are not entitled to free movement.
Been there, got the t-shirt.
My sale went very smoothly, as I was fortunate to find a very nice trustworthy chap, with the money being transferred from his UK bank account to mine within a couple of days
Once again, a fair degree of trust on both sides, especially from the buyer, as he paid me in full immediately but isn't collecting the car until March - he knows that the car is tucked away safe and sound until then
As regards importation, same as Jeffsy really, my buyer has a company in the UK and the Griff will be registered here but used over in France
I think he has to have French insurance though - he's lived there about 10yrs and all his cars have been registered this way, so there are ways around things (obviously he's a Brit though - probably a lot harder to get around the rules for the French)

I sold my Chim to a nice chap from Holland (which isn't France, I'll admit, but it's foreign, isn't it?
). He just brought a bundle of sterling with him that he got from his bank in Holland. Very easy transaction really, certainly compared to some UK time-wasters. We agreed the deal over the phone, I told him the truth about the car, and he turned up, paid what we agreed and off he went.

ETA - the eagle-eyed reader will have noticed the knackered hood which I put my hand through the previous evening whilst giving her a final wipe over. The buyer was pretty decent about it really.
