Robert, the Dave Hammerton replacement roof cover is definitely the route to take. It's outer layer is mohair but it contains a rubber membrane which negates ever having to waterproof the hood again. It really is a fantastic piece of kit and I successfully replaced the whole roof on my previous TVR with it last August.

It is tricky to get right though. For example, you have to ensure that it has the correct amount of tightness around the two corners of the lower hoop. Get this wrong, and you'll end up with 'waves' in the rear window and the material falling short of covering the foresides of the upper GRP hoop. Thankfully the adhesives supplied accomodate this and you can strip it off and make adjustments.

Should you be in any doubt about tackling this task on your own (and I would recommend doing it over a couple of summer days- outside), I would approach a good coach builder and have the kit sent c/o them.

What is mohair exactly? I've often wondered about buying a hood of this type but have no idea of the benefits.

I was going to say that so far no one's mentioned that favourite of the classic car brigade, "Double Duck" so I looked it up wink

Sounds like the same stuff: double duck textured hooding cloth/topping (cloth/rubber interlay/cloth)

Regards rarity and cost, I don't know if double ducks are any easier to catch then mo's scratchchin

The difference (I think) Rich, is that Dave's kit is pre-cut to exactly fit Chimaeras and Griffiths- with little room for error- as I mentioned. As BB alludes to in that link I pasted, it really is much better quality than the TVR original.
