Hi,

I am thinking out loud on this post so bear with me.

I currently have a westfield at the moment which i have done a few trackdays with. The intension being to race this next year however i have recently bough a kart and feel that racing this may be cheaper!. The reason being i havbe found myself finding gaps which no longer appear to be as big as first thought which i think when the racing will be hugely expensive with the westfield. Therefore i have been looking at getting a TVR to replace the westfield as i miss using the car to blat out on a weekend. The TVR will be used as a track car and may even go to the nurburgring and will occasionally be used to go to work. Which TVR would you recommend budget is around 15-16K. I am thiniking at the moment about the grifith 500!

Thanks in advance

Ross

Get yourself a Tuscan. You have all the speed/power you will ever need, plus the super car looks.

Fantastic cars, but spend a lot of time reading up on the Speed 6 engine if you consider one.

I'd be very tempted to have a look at Jellison's Chimaera with the Chevy LS6 engine if I were you.
More power than you could possibly need!

Stick with your first choice Ross, Griff 500cool. 5 years and counting for me. thumbup
Mind you a R400/500 superlight has been very tempting this year, but not so practical if you want to use it all year around on the road as well.

With your budget I'd be looking for a top quality Chimeara 450 (basically a Griff with a boot) and then get it supercharged. bounce

I'd then consider spending the leftover cash on a very long weekend in Amsterdam. wink

Thanks for all the advice and to answer a few ideas pout forward byt people.

I don't know what it is i think its the headlights but i am not keen on the chimeara.

The tuscan is a nice car but i slightly prefer the grifith.

As these cars are load and so is the westfield i have do you have any problems with noise limits on trackdays?

Yep, but there are several sources out there that supply track day silencer cans that you can fit for the day. Act, Merlin Motorsport, TVR Carparts etc.
My Griff is about 108db normal and I can get it down to 100db with track day cans. so you can get on most circuits.
Oh, a normal Griff with cats runs at about 94-98db but most of us like to be noisy and modify them wink

Thanks BlueBottle,

Were there any changes in the models which i should try and go for which would suit a track car bettr i have started my research and found they changed the g/box from an sd1 to a t5 in 1994 so i think i will be going for a post 1994 car! Is there any other improvements?

What are these cars like for getting stonechips and which are the best colour's for hiding them?

Thanks and Regards

Ross

Ignore all of the above and buy a cheap TVR Tasmin race car for less than £3000.00 and come racing in the Tuscan Challenge biggrin As they say in Royston Vasey "You'll never Leave" (I know, I live there!)

Thanks for all the advice. What do these cars have to prevent against oil surge?. Do they have baffled sumps, dry sumps, accumsumps?

Thanks and Regards

Been doing a little more thinking and researching and have come across the cerbera v8 4.5. How do these compare out of the box to the griffith. Has anyone used their cerberas on a number oif trackdays? How long between rebuilds if you do use them on track?

Mike "itsallyellow" has been racing a cerbera in the GT cup all last season with seemingly excellent results. And the 50k mile AJP under his bonnet seems to have performed impeccably. In fact he's even talking about using it for the Britcar 24h race.

Loads of other cerb owners use their cars for sprint racing, and if you have a look on youtube you'll find loads of people using them for track days too.

You have to remember that the AJP was originally conceived as a race engine for the Tuscan Challenge race cars, so there's no worries there that it can't take a thrashing on the track. Plus, an AJP is a flat plate V8, so like the Ferrari V8's, it loves to rev, and thats one thing you wont find a RV8 enjoying. For that reason alone, I think the cerb would be a more enjoyable track car.
