Couple of things...

Drove my 95 Griff 500 last night and it's started making a knocking/clunking noise in fourth and fifth gears and am I being paranoid or should I be worried? Basically, when travelling in these gears at low revs, typically under 2,000, if you press the loud pedal for a second or two then sharply lift off it, there's a distinct knock/clunk noise.

Now, I'll point out that I'm pretty clueless with mechanics and have absolutely no idea as to what could be causing this, but I'm worried that it's something that could cause it to fail it's MOT which is due at the end of the month.

This leads me on to my second question, this being my first TVR and it's first MOT whilst I've owned it, should I get a TVR specialist to sort the MOT out? I was thinking of asking the mechanic my Dad uses for his BMW to do it for me as he's very experienced but was just wondering if this would be a big mistake?

Thanks in advance - Chris

Is the clunking coming from the back of the car? Can you 'feel' it at all? Could it be the rear UJ's?

Painey - it sounds like drive line shunt...

The bolt on the diff can come undone... you will need
to remove the exhaust (six or 8 bolts on a large
plate near axle.. remove 4 prop shaft bolts (mark
prop & diff for reassembly)
then tighten the very large (38mm - I think) bolt
that is on the fronnt of the diff !

Then again - you could get your mechanic to do it..

Re: Mechanic & mot - yes someone reliable should be OK.

If the noise is from the rear of the car, more than likely it's the upper bush on the diff, especially looking at the age of your car. Cheap part to replace, absolute b'stard to do.

Not sure about the knocking...Could be many number of things.

Have you given the car a good full TVR service since you purchased it?

My S is going for MOT and service end OCT. This will be its first MOT and service since I got the car. I was generally advised to take it to a TVR specilist service agent etc. As they could give the car a good look over and advise on future work. I will leave it up to them whether they do MOT pre service on not...!!

If the car is not due for a service, then using your local man should be OK.

I use a local garage for my MOTs. They are so pleased to have something that's not a Fiesta that it gets better attention. You just have to stand by and help them with switches etc! Much more likely to get possible fail points fixed as they go too, IMHO.

Again, not sure about your first question, other than checking for things coming loose and undone along the drive chain, such as shafts, mounting points etc.. However, regarding MOT's, I will have my first MOT in Feb for my cerbera, and I'll be taking it to a TVR specialist, who will be/who will know a sympathetic test station regarding TVR's.

Do not do this!!! Total Bt, perhaps he could tell us how he is going to replace the collapsible spacer after tightening a pre-tensioned spacer and bearing. Anyway, on to your fault, if it happens when you are on and off the throttle it will be the top diff bush, it would be worth having all 3 bushes on the diff replaced.

Take it to somebody who knows what they are doing with Tvr's.

The knocking/clunk noise seems to be coming from the front left of the car, definitely not the rear which should rule out the diff. Also it doesn't appear to be anything to do with the front left wheel and it's not a constant noise either, it's just a single clunk/knock when you come off the throttle at low revs.

It was last serviced by David Batty in May (6k service) and he said at the time that it was in very good condition.

Any further ideas or is there anything in particular I should be checking for in the car's history that should have been replaced?

Cheers - Chris

Can you repeat it when the car is stationary (by blipping the throttle out of gear?) Lift the bonnet and take the roof off to listen... I'm no engineer, but it sounds to me like your engine might be loose!

Just been on the phone to Austec in Crawley about booking it in for its MOT and they mentioned that it could be a loose engine mount so I'll have the bonnet up next time I get it out the garage!

I hope that's what it is anyway as that won't be too costly, unlike the last thing I had to have done. Rear crankshaft oil seal, £15 oil seal and then £350 to fit it!!! B**ger that!!!

Cheers
