Winter Jobs, and Minor Mods, advice please!!!
Discussion
With the winter approaching (What a great summer er!!!), i am planning the following, for my 94 4ltr Chim:
1: Shorten trumpets in Plenum, buy 20mm
2: Smoothe bore induction kit
3: Remove pre cats
4: Insulater plate on Plenum
5: Paint Plenum and rocker covers whilst off
Questions and advice required are:
1: How difficult to remove exhaust manifolds and pre cats? and will removeal of pre cats require any further mods or any effect on MOT?
2: Can anyone recommend a Hi Temp, Hi Gloss Paint for the Rocker / Plenum covers? i am looking for a "day glo" type of Green.
Any further info / help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance,
Steve

It has no effect on MOT, some people myself included found it does make the exhaust sound a bit clattery and the manifolds do ring abit. Although not everybody seems to get this (or notice), I found some exhaust wrap around the old precat area deadened it down. Under bonnet temps are reduced a tad. Is it easy? depends on when your manifolds were last off and how big your hands are. You need a selection of different shaped 14mm spanners, new gaskets and worth replacing the bolts with stainless steel ones. If yours have been on a while then always a chance of a sheared bolt. Can then take 3-4 hours of bashing to get the precats out as well.On the flip side if your precats are are blocked and knackered you may see some power gains, but no way to tell that.
Would I bother again, tbh no
On a similar note, I still have a red powdercoated 72 mm plenum kicking around (to match my rocker covers and sump
) that I need to put on at some point. Got the larger bore silicon elbow (I make them out of a 135 degree bend cut off at 90 degrees as these have long enough legs to make it from the AMM to the plenum in one go) and the instructions for re-setting the throttle pot from Power; any other gotches? Does the stepper motor have a gasket? I assume Loctite 518 would be the sealant to use for the plenum-trumpet base matching faces?
I did blend the trumpet base and got the insulator plate already - I had them put on with the engine rebuild...

For the pre-cats theres no real need to remove the manifolds if you don't want to.
Remove the Y peice and Lamda sensors and you can pretty much see the pre-cats ( I found one of mine laying on top of the main cat which was handy)
Not sure how this bit works with health and safety but do wear a mask and gloves.
You now take your electric drill and a long fat masonry bit and set about the Pre cat, it's messy and for a while you feel you're getting nowhere. A long cold chisel (and possibly a long cold beer) may also help at this time, then all of a sudden out it plops.
Stick your wifes hoover up the pipe to remove any remaining crap and 'bingo' no pre-cats.
Oh Don't forget to take all the platinum down to Hatton Garden

Scuse the the pun, but shouldn't it be: "would the real CHIM shadey please stand up"!!!!Oh bugger there i go again, i suppose someone will copy that name now!!! Any takers?
Why not get the plenum powder coated. I sent the Plenum, swirl pot, expansion tank and a few other bit off earlier in the year. All the same colour, dead easy to clean and surprisingly cheap.
While you have the plenum off and sent away make yourself an insulator out of 3mm tufnol carp grade. a couple of quid off e-bay. I tried shortening the trumpets and messed it up so I but bought some Carbon fibre ones from ACT in the end.
Old trumpets

Carbon fibre from ACT

After the powder coating and all put back together

I know i know but i couldnt resist it,
Andy you may or may not remember me, you took me round snetterton in your car on sc powers promotions day, all i can say is wow great conversion,
do you know what bhp and torque your car was putting out before and after the sc conversion as you said you had the mc1 cam.

Hi Rich, yeah I remember you. The is car is making 265bhp at the wheels and a little more torque, my figures are at here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a....Andy you may or may not remember me, you took me round snetterton in your car on sc powers promotions day, all i can say is wow great conversion,

I put it on the dyno soon after Snetterton and it was only making 230 at the wheels and leaning out horribly at higher revs.
Raising the fuel pressure corrected this pretty much but I still need to get it mapped properly, as it's now a bit rich at low revs which is costing me torque low down.
Unfortunatly i think it's going to be a while before TVR Power are in a position to do it.
The last time I had it on a RR prior to supercharging was at Austec and it made about 170 at the wheels I can't remember if that was with or without the MC1, although the MC1 won't make a big difference to the BHP.
