Griff Targa Panel painting advice please
Discussion
I have cut my spare roof panel in half and removed the old cloth material as i would like to paint it gloss black.
I have rubbed it down to a very smooth state and would like to know the following..
How should i paint it ?
Can i just under coat it ? will the paint key or should i treat it first with something
How many coats of under coat should i apply etc etc and indeed top coat ?
Any help would be most appreciated especially from ex TVR employees who have experience of painting fiberglass.
Many thanks in advance.

Try calling the guys at S&D I'm sure they'll give you some pointers.
I do know that the panel I supplied to them was sprayed with several coats of primer/filler and rubbed down in between coats to give a smooth pinhole free finish but beyond that I've no idea

Did you get my PH mail ?I suspect that it will be all too easy to scratch the paint when the panel is off.
When I was at Rockingham last year, I spoke to P R Wood, who had a two piece roof on their stand.
They were supplying it with a moulded finish that looked like a vinyl roof from a distance, but not too good close up.
They didn’t offer a covered option like the original because it would be difficult to get a match between the new roof and an older riser section.
They were prepared to offer a painted option, but thought it would soon get scratched, so didn’t recommend it.
My plan was to wait until I need to replace the riser and buy extra material to match. Then cover the two-piece at the same time.
Alternatively, I want them to make it with an exterior like the interior, smooth clear gel coat with carbon fibre appearance. For those of us with black hoods, this could look really good.

I'd guess it'd be susceptible to getting scratched too Paul; I'm sure you've considered that though. Maybe you could knock up a soft cotton sock for each half before they go into their vinyl bags.
How would a gloss panel look with the rear foldy bit up against it? What about a matt/satin black.

We've borrowed barreti's painted 2 piece which is blue and the rear section is black so stands out like a sore c0ck.
Unfortunately, the weather has been that crap we've put the one piece back on. I did use it 2 weekends ago and I got one drip by the gearstick which was good given the amount of rain. I put a picnic blanket on the floor put one piece (top down) on the blanket, folded it over and put the 2nd piece in (like spoons). Then folded the end of the blcket up and put the sections in the left corner with the rounded edges into the corner. Fits well but personally I wouldn't paint it as it is very easy to damage.
