Indeed, especially as the guy selling it bought a copy (same one??) in the USA recently for about £55

Jesus Q. Christ, there are some comedians selling stuff on Ebay. Some folk just don't seem to bother researching what they're buying, either. I was looking at a book earlier on, that would sell for about £25. The seller wants £4 carriage. So straight away you're looking at £21 top whack, EVEN IF it was new, which it's not. There are several days still to go, so this book maight reach the thick end of twenty quid.
If I'm buying a used item, I expect a sizeable discount on the new price, otherwise what's the point?
To be fair, I have smugly chortled on occasion when something I've sold has gone for silly money, but I usually only sell stuff that has cost me buttons to start with, so I don't moan if I don't make a big profit. As far as buying is concerned, I get p155ed off with the jokers who have cable modems and wait till the last second to add a few pennies to whatever my top bid is, almost as if to spite me. Im sure that there can't be THAT many people out there who want the things I do.

Ian,
you have to decide what is the maximum You would be willing to pay and bid that, if someone bids more than that amount then they win by the minimum bid increase. They may have bidded much more or just a little more, you will never know.
If you would have been willing to pay a quid more then you should bid that in the first place.
If you have bid substantially more that the guy with the cable modem then HE may be in for a shock as the price could increase more that he expects....
The key is to decide what is the absolute maximum that you would be prepared to pay and bid that from the start, although the system registers you maximum price it only bids the necessary value to put you in the lead. If someone jumps in in the last few seconds with a bid that is a few pence higher then the present bid then the price will only go up a little and provided it is within your maximum bid value you will still win the item.
Or you could of course use Bid Napper and be the one that gets in at the last minute
It is a nice bit of software that bids a few seconds before the end of the auction on your behalf, so no waiting up until the auction finishes, go to bed safe in the knowledge that a computer is bidding for you - of course, if someone else has still gone higher than you, you will still loose it
