Further to our chat earlier today I've had the intake piping off tonight to see whats been strangling the car, as you'll be able to see from the link www.freewebs.com/harrywv8s/induction.htm the main hose from the filter that goes around the front of the radiator to the fixed ali pipe doesn't appear too healthy
. Apologise for the quality of the pics but it is a camcorder and it is fairly dim in the garage
.
The filter is a recent K&N one and apart from a quick tap to get the flies out seems pretty good.
Do you think this is enough to strangle the engine, as discussed
.
If anyone else has a V8S and has a better route for these pipes let me know. Much appreciated in advance.

Can't really see that well up the inside of it and I daren't chop it until I've got a replacement section in my hand
.
From what i can see it is effectively a 50% restriction in the diameter at that point. Three loops of the metal bracing have come away and have pierced the pipe too.
Question is this significant enough i.e would the air flow recover further up the pipe from this and carry on as normal or is it like sticing your hand over half the air filter
.
Does this also mean that I need to get the car adjusted/retuned again to suit any improvement in the air flow
.

From those pics it looks like you're running the inlet pipe to the left of the manifold, so the original pipe running under the manifold is redundant? That looks better than the original. Mine uses a cold air box on the top of the passenger's footwell and does away with that long induction pipe altogether. It gets nice cold air from the high pressure area in front of the windscreen when the car is moving, but sadly it still pulls in hot air from the engine bay when stationary. When I get round to it, I'm going to replace this with an insulated pipe out to the front of the rad pretty similar to yours from what I can see. (I've already got the rad ducted which gives me a handy cold areas at the front to pull cold air from as well as improving cooling.)
Peter I see what you are saying and understand why you think from the poor quality pic that it runs to the left of the manifold, but it doesn't at the moment (thats the fresh air to the passenger pipe you can see).
However, replacement pipe should be with me in the morning (Tim
)and I will try run it as you suggest, I think it would be a lot better, removing two 90 and one 30 bends in the process
.
What I will do is monitor the AFM voltages under full load
, also run the car with it routed both ways to see if there is much difference in the readings.

Edited because even i could understand me own england

you might want to clean the filter whilst its out ?
BTW the new pipes will be with you tommorow am (Friday) guaranteed delivery.
Tim
Well I gave it a wipe over with apaint brush and agood bang to remove the flys and grime, but it not that dirty.
Question
its a K&N one what type I don't know but is 4" dia and 8" long cylinder, I assume this is up to the job or is there a better type/size for it
. Day off tomorrow so will be able to stuck into it when the bits arrive, don't you love 4 day weeks

This is a K&N made specially to replace the TVR sponge filter, it does look small but also used on 500's without any problems, no part number and only available through certain specialists

Bits arrived OK, one last question
. Whilst I'm at it, the AFM to plenum alignment on the S is about 2" out of true, if you see what I mean, it kinks in the short run from the AFM to plenum. Is it worth moving the AFM to align them up in a straight line, not too difficult a job, any possible benefit from it
.

Ah well finished it yesterday, Tim you didn't tell me it's a bloody bugg*r to get that pipe on the ends
.
I attempted (spent hours to be exact)to re-route it down the left hand side as mentioned before, but try as I might I couldn't get it not to foul the inner wheel arch or be hard up against the exhaust
, so I settled on the existing route, poor as it is
.
I moved the AFM across, those with a V8S will spot the difference
.
Pictures here www.freewebs.com/harrywv8s/induction2.htm The replacement ducting is a fetching terracotta colour and its route is a lot more obvious in the pics compared to the black stuff.
Took it for a quick test run this afternoon, whilst measuring the AFM output, before today max output from it (5AM type) was 4.8 volts(ish), now its 4.97 Volts @ 5900/6K rpm.
Question, this voltage is now, I beleive, in excess of a standard 500 on full suck, I think that max for this AFM is 5V, or is it already there given tolerences, anyone seen 5V or excess on one of these AFM's
.

Ah earlier pics piping removed no wonder you can't see them
, you can see why I wanted to re-route it though.
Yes it catted.
The problem with the blocking the rad bit, is that I would like it to be right at the top and to the left, but when you close the bonnet, the air scoop for the fresh air pipe that side then crushes the induction pipe (have a look at yours and let me know if it the same). I have thought that those air scoops would make fine brake cooling ducts though
.
Whilst you're having a look let me know if your AFM lines up with the plenum or not, all the ones I've seen don't but you never know.

By AFM lining up you lost me sorry, its only on the tubing so surely there will be a slight mis alignment ![]()
If you look at this one the AFM is in a dead straight line to the plenum i.e. the air doesn't have to kink left and right in the space of 6 inches just prior to hit the plenum
Every little helps in my book, if it has not effect then so be it,but it wasn't too much trouble and I feel better for it

Depends on what size metal pipe you're fitting it onto 3" o/d should be OK but for some reason TVR occasionally used fractionally larger diameter pipe.
some fit OK some are tight.
So the big question, any improvement from the driving seat ?
Cheers Tim
Not sure, only really took it up the dual carriage way to check out AFM readings, I'll be taking it for an A road blat tomorrow so will know for definate
.
I'd be lying if it didn't feel a bit quicker, but at this level could anyone notice 10/15 bhp.
Haven't driven it all week so it always feels quick first off, can get to the end of second gear in around/under 5 secs without abusing it
but the lug in the higher gears is where it is noticeable.
Still seriously considering a different RR for a second opinion though.
