Pulled into a garage today and started filling up only for the pump to shut off after a litre or two. My confusion increased when the person at the cashier desk started banging on the glass, turning purple and ranting at me.

Ambled over to the shop doorway to ask what was going on and was informed she'd shut the pump off because I'm only supposed to put petrol into an approved container which she couldn't see as it was in my boot. Further ranting informed me that until I showed her the container the pump was staying off. I explained that the approved container was in fact the fuel tank and unfortunately I was unable to show it to her. I did suggest she come to the car for a look though.

Pump was switched back on biggrin

I live in a country where when you fill up you are still actually 'attended to', including wiping the windscreen, asking if oil levels are OK etc.

Yeah but the guy that pumps your gas would also eat your pet Labrador if he could.

How do you know your house has been burgled by Koreans?

Your children's homework has been done and the dog is missing.

I was told off over the PA system for using my phone, trying to contact my Dad to ask him about the filler release switch, I shouted back at him, "You try and find the fuel filler cap release then!"

He didn't apologize when I went into pay. I used my intiative and tried the ignition on and tried a switch and it popped open! Sometimes some car manufacturers are too clever at making these mechanisms!

It was an S1 Bentley, I'd never taken it to get petrol before!

A few years ago, a petrol station attendant appeared beside me as I was filling up, to remind me that I shouldn't have answered the phone on the forecourt.

She was right, but I couldn't help pointing out that she should maybe have put her cigarette out before coming out to tell me.

Heh heh.

First time I filled up the attendant said he thought I was putting it in the boot too.

Priceless moment the other day with a girl having a full blown conversation on her mobile at the pump, though she was still in the driving seat. I waited behind for her to pull away for a minute or two but she was oblivious to me being there, so I filled up at the next one. The attendant in the shop didn't even see she was on the phone but said "she's been there for a while" when I went to pay.

As I came out she was still gabbing away so I beckoned at her to shift it and she wound down the window and said: "When has my life been any of your business?" I told her to have a look at the queue forming behind her.

She was fit - but talk about giving blondes a bad name...

I had various petrol station attendants switching the pump off on a number of occasions, asking to see the container I was filling in the boot of the Griff..

I notice how you never mentioned that one to me when you visited when I lived in New Malden. Survival instinct, I guess?

Having owened a petrol station four 25 years i can tell you theft is the biggest problem we have and the best way to steal it is in 25lt containers sat in the boot or back seat so perhaps she was just been over cautious!

Has no one seen the Mythbusters about the mobile and petrol station?

Its a myth! Its people getting in and out of their cars creating static, then they go up to the pump to fill up! Remember the MINI recall for the fuel filler hose not being earthed, may cause your MINI to explode!

Nothing to do with mobile phone signals at all!

Yep, I saw that episode, but you can bet the light of true and facts will not permeate the gloom of lies and stupidity responsible for company policy across the filling station industry.

I'm just down the road from "Tipton"...... The amount of Transit vans with four holes in the side is comical.

Unless you own a petrol station of course smile
