This probably puts paid to my plans of a track day later this month frown

Just noticed a gash out of the side of a rear tyre, utter pisser as they are only bout 50% worn..

I'd love to hear "thats repairable" but I've a horrible feeling it new tyre time. what do you think of the picture attached?

Cheers

Dave

p.s what should I be paying for a toyo proxy T1R? got quoted 129 (not sure if that included VAT actually) from micheldever tyres near andover, I understand they are very popular and cheapest in the area... or have I been misled.

That's a new tyre I'm afraid, can't be repaired and for £129 it's not worth risking it.

Thought so, I cant really just replace the one can I ? dont they need to be done as a pair so tread and grip is even?

Feel free to tell me im wrong as it halves the bill and that track day might still be a possibility!! smile

You don't have to replace both but it makes sense. I guess if you keep the other one then you'll have a spare if you're unlucky enough to have this happen again.

A lot of TVR owners are moving to falken FK452s (me included) great tyres and good prices www.falkentyres.co.uk

Worth considering as an alternative to toyos

The tyre doesn't look like it is down to the cords, if it is not and there is no sidewall bulging i.e. showing a fracture in the web structure the tyre is fine. You can give yourself a bit more peace of mind by applying some vulcanising solution from your tyre dealer to bond the flaking rubber back to the casing.

Are you saying it might be repairable??

Its definitly NOT down to the cords, but is quite deep. There is no bulging, just this "sliver" of tyre that is cominga away.

Take it to a reputable tire place and see what they think.

If they think its safe then you could keep that pair for track days only and wear them out. But only if your pretty confident its not going to fail.
if there is any doubt then get a new tire.

Check online tire places like blackcircles and see if you can get tires cheaper from there. You can have them delivered and then have them fitted localy for £5-10 a tire.

Take it to a tyre fitters and get them to check it out. I had one not quite as extensive but as deep and told it would be ok, forgot all about it until rears needed changing 10,000m later. As B.D says if not down to the wire try sealing with some rubber solution. Goes without saying though always best to be over cautious.

If it were me I would not risk it, it's the the bit between you and the road and possibly the difference between you and a hedge/field/tree/post for what £150?

driving with bad rubber, is like riding a motorbike with no helmet.

its the only link between you and the road mate, i would change it if it were me.

the cost will be less than any little mishap you could have

laughrofl

Good god, talk about killing two birds with one stone! wink

1) Daves a pleb because he launched his camera out the back window of his TVR

2) Daves a pleb because he chickened out of taking/posting pics of his receptionist!

I think I should put those on my profile! smile
