I've just had all 4 wheels done on the Cerb due to kerbing and oxidisation/paint flaking and they now look like new .... on the rims/outside. I'm very please dwith the results but wondered if it's the norm for the whole wheel to be repainted?

Whilst the inside of the wheel can only be seen if you peak between the 'spokes' are these generally not repainted on a wheel refurb? I know you pays your money .. etc but just wondered what the experiences of others were?

It's worth getting the whole wheel done with the RLs so that you get as good surface as you can for the tyre to seal against and to cope with the porosity of the wheel.

Thanks for the reply Steve - can anyone help me with my question as I may need to have redress with the garage if it turns out all refurbs include all the wheel....

Hi Paul.

The new toy looks good cool, hope your enjoying it?

From my experiances, I do know that some places (more often the cheaper ones whistle) that offer a refurb just deflate the tyre from the rim, fill/sand the edges and repaint the face.

IIRC one guy said he did it that way because if you took the tyre off, refurbed the rim, then put the tyre back on, it may damage the repaired part of the rim as the tyre was refitted. Mmmm really scratchchin........I didn't stay any longer so never found out if he was using Hubba Bubba to do the filling hehe.

I got my wheels powder coated last year, £45/wheel, tyres come off too. Much tougher and smoother finish than paint, plus the silver is nigh on identical to the standard colour. To not take the tyre off is pretty lazy. A good tyre fitter will not damage the finish putting them back on again.

Edited to add that because the powder coat flows so well, it fills in the rough finish on the inside of the wheel, which makes cleaning then a doddle.

Thanks for the replies and Hi Craig - tyres definitely came off (new valves put on as old ones were looking dodgy?!) and I'm v.happy overall - guess I should have stipulated exact job to save any ambiguity but at least the ouside rims are as new!

Can't remember the name of the people who actually do them but Pro Tyres in Enfield outsource their refurb work. I haven't used them but have seem some pretty good stuff come back while waiting for tyres. Keep me informed if you find someone though as I need to get the ZT's done too

I have nothing to add to this conversation, except to say that I enjoyed your use of the word 'porosity'.

Not exactly local (north Kent) but I used Lepsons in Gillingham for my BMW wheels and am very impressed.

They look a very professional outfit and IIRC apparently do 500 wheels a week!!

I left mine there for 3 or 4 days. They also replaced 2 tyres for me at a decent price at the same time.

Just to answer the original question ...a refurb should involve the wheel being stripped and resprayed....an alloy repair would involve a localised repair to the damaged area and the respraying would be blended into the good finish...hope that makes sense
