Hi guys,

I rather foolishly left the handbrake fully on then didn't have cause to use the Chimaera for 10 days, so unsurprisingly it stuck on somewhat when I did eventually need to move it. This sort of thing happens from time to time and as normal there was a bit of a bang and it seemed to release, the only thing is now I can hear a definate scraping sound from the rear (passenger side I think), so I am hoping that is something to do with the handbrake sticking in the first place, as everything was fine before that.

I don't know how the handbrake mechanism works but I suspect something is still stuck "on" somewhere (does that sound realistic?) and is therefore rubbing, the noise itself speeds/slows with the speed of the car.

Any thoughts??

Cheers smile

Pads onto the disk? Has it been outside? Water gets into the disks and they warp from inside. Just had to have all 4 replaced for the same reason although they were slightly worse than just scraping. They may look OK from the outside but take a wheel off and look at the inside, you'll probably find the pad is only clearing a small area in the centre of the disk. It may clear but maybe best to replace if they aren't nearly new. Not something to mess about with.

As FFG says, it's a quick job to jack up the car, prop it on a stand and pull the pads out to see what they are telling you. If there is something amis either the pads themselves or the rotor will have tell-tale marks on to give you a clue whats happening.

Hmmm, the pads and disk are brand new (well about 1,000 miles ago tops).

A local garage (non-tvr) said its probably the handbrake sticking somewhere or possibly a small part of the pad has broken off when they stuck and is rubbing.

Oh well, I'm at TVR Power on Saturday, I'll ask them to have a quick look...

Does the disk look blue ? I had a small rubbing type noise from one side, check the disks, 3 silver ones, one blue one ! They go blue with the heat. Local indie popped the pads out and found there was some contamination on the pads and the slider was a bit sticky. Lubed the slider , skimmed the pads, put it back together problem solved. This was with Black Diamond grooved and drilled , EBC Reds.

They are EBC Red Stuff pads, with drilled/grooved discs too....so it does sound as though something is sticking, I am hoping someone at TVR Power is able to have a look whilst I am having a run in the Taraka demonstrator... smile

Just tap the caliper either way gently with a small mallet. That should sort it yes

How did you do this if you don't mind me asking? Was it manually or with a machine?

No idea to be honest. They whisked the car away , did the work and gave it back all working again. Only took about an hour. The impression I got was that a machine was used to skim a thin layer off the pad surface to remove the contamination. I am no expert but it sounded plausible to me....

I think its just rubbing with a block covered with emery paper, nothing more, to take the glaze off.
