Need new manifold bits. New ECU chip. Problems with passing MOT emissions. No power increase in reality. Extra noise. I can think of far better ways of spending a £1000 or so...
Makes the car modified so insurers need to know and might get funny.
Far better off just removing the pre-cats or leaving things alone.

I can only really quote on my car (4.0 Chimaera) which is completely pussyless
I wouldn't have chosen to do it but due to another problem the car de-catted itself
so they had to come out anyway I just didn't have any new ones put back in
MOT's will be a problem unless you know man that can
It will be louder, which is nice, if it's quicker I can't tell, but it's quicker than when it went in to see the 'doctor' because it was running like a sick dog
Alway tell the insurance people everything, mine didn't care
So in conclusion if you've killed the cats go for it, if they're fine I can think of better things to spend the money on

It costs nowhere near £1000 to Decat a Rv8 TVR,cheapest option is to open up the manifold and remove the cat then reweld, but for better is to buy a replacement manifold from Tim at ACT approx £200 (this allows you to replace the STD manfold when needed e.g.MOT time)along with the factory ECU chip(£50) and tune resistor (£5)sees the job done for under £300,excellent value I'd say.Just because it's a TVR doesn't have to mean expensive, some poeple seem to have more money than sense when it comes to TVR's.
I know someone who took the pre-cats out of their 500 themselves. A very fiddly job it turned out to be, and he's very mechanically minded too! Not expensive just time consuming.
When he started it up for me the first time - WOW! It was also in his garage and when he blipped the throttle I swear the roof lifted

Ok I know of better things to do with £300...
The £1000 is based on the decat kit that TVR were promoting and the assumption that the whole manifold down to the exhaust needed replacing which on many cars is the case.
It also includes some labour.

What's the point ?
I'm working on the statements that it doesn't increase power and creates emmisions problems (they frequently road side test in my area and the noise would attract this) If its the noise thing you want just cut out the back box as discussed in the "sports" exhaust thread, I did mine last weekend and put it on the emmisions thingy (it's a mates garage) afterwards, we got readings that would give an mot pass but with the noise of the devil. Oh and it cost me less than £100 which includes a full second hand system and the original is still leaning in the corner.

Emmisions and noise are problems, track day noise tests can be very strict, out on the road however poeple expect TVRs to be loud.Has my own car is an import having been first registered in Cyprus the emmisions/cats requirements are abit of a grey area(although on the rolling road the emmisions at MOT test rev sites are under the CO limits with low hydrocarbons).
It's a fact that TVRs seem to suffer misfires/poor fueling more than most(due to various things)and unburnt oily deposits ruin cats, makes me wonder how many cars are running with blocked or partly cats causing excess back pressure and poor performance?
