Well chaps, got a couple of people coming to see the Mustang over New Year so the ball is rolling ...

Then I'll probably be making ridiculous offers on all the Chims in the classifieds

Mind you, the missus threw a spanner in the works ( always good to get the other half on your side in these matters) with her Christmas quote:

"I prefer the Griffin (sic) to the Chimaera"

That's good news!!! Do you reckon you could live with a Griffith? If she is to drive the car as well - was she driving the Mustang as well? - you may want her to try both. It is easy to get sh!t scared in a Griff.
Keep us posted !

Must admit that havent driven a Griff - everyone kept saying that it was just too raw and "focused" for general use - all the independants and dealers said go for a Chimaera as the first TVR - have to agree for the moment....

Any comments from other Griff owners? Is this valid?

Cheers,

Paul

PB, I bought a 4.0 Griff just over a year ago and I've found it fine. It is 'only' a 4 litre, so it is not quite so raw as the 5l. I drove Chims aswell when I was looking. Frankly both were amazing.
You are right, though, the Griff was more focused - but not too much so on the 4l.
I love the car and do many many miles in it all over the country. I wouldn't change my choice given the time again.
Just IMHO. I think you'll have a job, Mikey, finding someone who is not pleased with their car, whichever they chose.
Let us know what you choose.

I drove a Griff 500 everyday (non power steered!) for 2 years before the Cerby... Absolutely fantastic and if you think it is too hard to drive then don't buy one! Never driven a Chim so can't comment!

Put 10k on my 500 this year in all weathers. The only thing that was more fun was watching Archer go down for his 4-stretch.

I think the truth is you can't really make a decision until you have tried one for yourself. But with snow and ice on the roads it is hardly a great time to get the best out of any of TVR's models! Apart from, maybe, the ones they used to drape over their cars at the motorshow...

Mike, at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference.
I went for a Griff 500 back in July and use it every day in all conditions. I find it useable enough and GREAT fun! Love it!!
Like you my previous car was a Mustang. In comparison, the Griff is 100x more useable! Then again it was a Pro Street '67 fastback!!!

Never driven a Chim so can't compare but my Griff 500 (non PAS) is a pussy cat. Still, it's always fun to tell people what an animal it is, and how it takes a real driver to control it properly.

Good discussion I think guys.

What's the average number of cars driven before you made a decision and signed the cheque (finance agreement!) Some say drive as many as you can – others say when you find a good 'un buy it – could be the 1st/2nd, could be the 210th.

Good point raised here Mike.

I know the sensible view is to look at as many as possible, even if the first seems great - but the temptation / fear of someone else buying it whilst you decide - often makes you hasty.

When I bought my S3 I bought it on the spot, 2nd one I'd driven on the same day. The V8S was the first I looked at - but this time I went away to think about it for 24 hours and also looked at a Griff 400 and Chim 4.0L to confirm I really prefered the S series.

Best bet is to research the model you want thoroughly (I did), then narrow the number you look at down over the phone (history, mileage, colour etc), then drive at least 2 or 3 (err almost did this).

Cheers,
JSG.

I did the same as JSG.. Saw two cars on the one day (350i) and when I got to the second one, I made him an offer - Didn`t even drive it...

Stupid of me really, cause it was a real dog....

Get it checked out by a 'proper' TVR mechanic, and if you like the car then buy it. It is for you after all.

What was so wrong with the first one that you felt you had to make an offer straight away on the second one?!?!

I did loads of research.. even read this website a lot .. phoned up TVR etc etc.. then looked carefully at what was about in my price range.. picked what seemed like the best one and went for a look (S2).

Using all the information I had gathered, I managed to crawl all over it an tell the owner more about it than he actually knew (like it was an S1.5 rather than a 2) and then once he'd realised I was an "expert" and knew what I was on about I made him a really low offer based on a better ficticious car I said was going for £X elsewhere. (I still have sleepless nights)

So in sumary, I comitted the ultimate sin and bought the first car I looked at, and its fine

I did it with my 914 as well some years ago and made 25% on it when I sold it 2 years later.. my advice has to be research as much as possible, afterall your research should automaticaly guide you to looking at the better cars anyway... and the first one might be the right one. (could be Sh!te too mind )

Cheers
Matt.

Thanks Matt, quite interesting about the sleepness nights

My Mustang was the 2nd one I saw, although I looked through loads of mags/ads and all over the web (mostly US sites though obviously). The first one I saw was also like mine a 67 289 V8 and it was overpriced for what it was, ran like a dog, had awful wheels, had unbelievable wind noise cos the rubbers were shot and that dictated for the rest of the car really – not very original (and this from a specialist Mustang dealer). and the 2nd one I saw, the exact opposite.Travelled 3 hours to see it. Gotta bear in mind though that there's lot of TVR's out there – Mustang's (good ones) are not very thick on the ground, so obviously gonna have more choice on the TVR front. Mind you, I'm gonna be spending three times the amount on the TVR than I did ont eh Mussie. But what difference does that make really – it's only money

Right, confirmation tonight - my South London 'buyer' is coming on Saturday!

One step closer then hopefully.

Someone please just comfort me that I am doing the right thing. The Mussie has cost bugger all in maintenance since I bought it!!

Bought the 350 after 1 look. No real problems but could have got a better car if I had looked, price came in to it though, no real gripes. Bought the 400 after 1 look (sucker hat on) got it mech checked but not the engine, oh dear, cost alot. Happy now the work is done. I should have looked more. What I spent on the engine and the car would have got me a nice early Griff.
