Right chaps, bit of a dilemma

Ive secured the purchase of a Cologne 2.8i with full running gear and ancilleries, only problem is, its off of an XR4X4

now Ive been told its not too much of a problem, just remove half shafts, change sump, pickup & flywheel and it should all drop together....but Ive just been chatting with a guy who breaks and sells XR4i's and XR4X4's and he doesnt think that its possible to mate the Type 9 4X4 gearbox up on a RWD car

Anyone have the appropriate info?

The gearbox transfer case is linked to the front diff via a prop. then front driveshaft passes through the sump. change the sump for a standard one from a RWD granada or old 2.8 capri etc. 2.8 flywheels are all the same from memory. Flywheels only changed when the 2.9 was introduced. you may need the earlier cars oil pick up etc.

neil.

So if I was to remove the front diff & prop, change sumps and oil pick up, then it can be used without a problem? Or would I need some kind of blanking plate for the transfer casing?

Measured it up when I had everything apart. You'd need to cut holes in the plates in behind the uprights. As per everything in life it's possible, but at what hassle?

Thats my point...its an interesting idea, but is it worth the hassle which would probably lead to the car being out of commission for longer than needed

Well the weight of the V6 anchor would certainly mean the front end had weight on it to grip. I as tempted to do it, cos my spare engine was a 4x4 setup with sump and everything, and (getting back to the original question) I can see no reason why the Sierra XR4i setup won't fit. The bloke you've been speaking to might be confusing things with the 4l lump. The 4l from the Explorer is based on the Cologne engine, but I'm told the block is much taller than the 2.8/2.9 unit, and doesn't fit within the space capacity of the smaller engines.

Iain

Why not buy a 2.8 engine from a tasmin? I have one sitting on my workshop floor.

Well sir, I would've done if I would have known about it before christmas laugh

The engine is just a standard 2.8i cologne from an XR4X4 so, from the information provided, it should drop pretty much straight in as long as the diff, sump, shafts are changed smile

it would be a lot easier to junk the 4x4 box and just bolt up a type Nine (or maybe a 4speed ), or a better more expensive option would be to get an adaptor bell housing and fit a T5
