Does anyone know of any companies in the Middx area which can do a localised re-stitch repair to the rear screen of a Chimaera? I had one of those "oh dear" moments whilst washing it this morning to be left with an 8" gap around the top LH corner curseThe screen and hood appear to be fine, I guess the stitching has just gone rotten with old age.

I realise I will have to bite the bullet and get the whole thing done properly in time but for now I was hoping that someone could make good with heavy duty needle and thread.

Time is somewhat of the essence as the car is going to be on the TVR stand at the Ally Pally in three weeks so any suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks in advance - Andy

Yes i agree with Del, i've been there done that. Take a trip to you local heal bar, barter with them for some of the thread they use to sow shoes up with, they may even sell you a couple of needles, get a couple as you will most likely break the first one. Before you start drag the thread and the needle over a candle a few times, this will aid the thread sliding through, lubrication i think its called. Then just follow the dots from the original stitching.
Good luck, i estimate about 1" an hour...........hehe.Don't forget to buy some "Renova" sealer to stop it leaking afterwards. You can get to their site by typing in "Renova" into Google, But perhaps some kind pistonheader might like to add the link for you.

Thanks guys for your feedback - in the meantime I have decided to have the rear screen replaced outright but will bear in mind your advice if I have probs in future.

Could I ask you where you got the rear screen replaced & how much it cost as mine is getting a bit scratched now and is starting to split where it meets the canvas where it bends when you put the roof down.

hi guys
i had the same problem last year!! and was quoted around £250 to have the rear screen replaced. i was told by some other guys here to try my insurance as it could class as a rear windscreen and they would repair it, you would only have to pay the excess! i didnt try with my insurance so i dont know if it works! (people here said they have).
i opted for a complete replacement of the hood this is only £310 including p&p. i have not received it yet but it sounds good!
here is a post i put on a chim page.
i have just ordered a complete rear folding section and hood set form this guy
its for a griff but the same as chims

Is the hood the same as on S series cars?

There's one for sale in the classifieds at the mo which might be cheaper than getting yours fixed / new one.

Car is going to the trimmers tomorrow - I'll post another note at the weekend with the outcome - if it's a good job I'll publicise where it was done and the cost etc - if not I'll invite PM's to explain why in the time honoured manner type

Picked up car on Friday - super job. Trimmer was Andy Stenning of AJ Trimmers in Bourne End, nr Marlow. Cost was £400 which was of course the whole rear hood section not just the window. He had forewarned that the hood may not seperate from the frame cleanly and sure enough this turned out to be the case. Very pleased with his handiwork and although it's quite an investment, I think it's worth it for appearance sake not to mention staying dry!!

Looks great Andy thumbup

Is the window nice and soft and does it fold down easy? Also is there a noticeable difference in the shades between the new rear hood and the targa section, which being older may be faded, or have you 'renovo'd' it recently? It looks a good match in the photo though but sometimes the camera can be deceiving.

Marlow (bit of a trek) & £400 might mean I'll have to wait a bit before considering getting it done as the car is in for it's 6k service, a new MC1 cam evil, chassis treatment and a recored rad so pennies a bit tight at the moment Pick her up next weekend....can't wait! bounce

Hello mate,

Have only had one tentative go at folding hood so far and that was just to make sure it functioned OK and tension was correct - being very cautious as ambient temperature is so cold - would be pretty gutted if I managed to crease it straight away! The plastic appears to be similar in flexibility to the previous window which is not necessarily a bad thing as it wasn't the cause of the original problem anyway. As for colour matching, you are quite right, the photo is slightly flattering but to be honest it's pretty close and you only really see it if you're looking for it. Andy has given me the remainder of the roll of material which I will probably get him to recover the targa with shortly - like you I am just trying to spread the running costs over a few months! Cost btw if hood was reusable would have been £260.

If you wanted to see the result close up you're more than welcome - I work in Bicester which is part way to Worcs at least - like your pics also - Cooper Green, very nice but perhaps I am slightly biased beer Good luck with the mods/repairs onging also - would like to here the outcome of the new cam when you have the chance.

Cheers, Andy

Would be good to see it...Bicester is not a million miles away from me. In fact you might want to join us for a run through Cotswolds...we did one last Spring and it was great? Keep an eye out on the South West forum. Do you go to any meets TVRCC or PH? I have a client near Bicester and she has a Corvette C5 V8 5.7 litre and it looks awesome.

Here's my thread re my service which I will update when I pick the car up next week.
