If you decide to go for just a safety camera detector I would recommend the Road Angel compact, really easy to use, easy to mount, and detects everything its legally allowed to do.

Hi Si,

I've got a Snooper Evolution AND LOOK WHERE IT GOT ME.....you know only too well eh !!!! Seriously it ticks all the boxes however my only complaint is that the alert tone is only just loud enough to be heard above my dinky lil ol V8 !! Oh, and also get one that runs on batteries as well as the cigarette lighter cos its a pain locating it and driving whilst its plugged in. Hope this helps and if you need any more tips on avoiding points dont ask me....! See ya soon

Road Angel Compact.

I'm just upgrading from Road Angel 2. The advantage of battery operation, easy mount etc, is the 'Compact' alerts to known (which are and have to be publicised) Mobile Camera sites of any type.

I'm curious to know if anyone has hands on knowledge of a better machine? I upgraded from a Valentine 1, which is still the best rated laser detector etc, but how can it be any use without having a data base of camera locations? Even applying 'horses for courses' logic doesn't make any sense as to why anyone would want a Val 1 over a data base type?

I have tried the Road Angel in my Elan and didn't like the fact that mine took ages to find any satellites!
I now have a Snooper S6 NEO. The supplied GPS aerial is hidden UNDER my dashboard and still find satellites quickly. I have mounted the unit just under the light switch and managed to hide all the wires under the lower dash. I also have the optional radar/laser gun detector mounted near the front number plate.
IMHO a great system that has never let me down. If you're at the George at the next Herts and Beds meet I'll show you........

I think detectors are illegal now. Road Angel-type products are ok because they simply maintain and report on a database of known sites, not detecting.

detectors are still ok, however they are generally not very good, or reliable. Radar can be detected to a reasonable degree however for fixed sites (speed cameras) its better to use a GPS database type device.

Detecting laser / IR traps it utterly useless, by the time your device warns you there is a someone pointing a "laser gun" at your car its too late, takes 1/3 of a second to get a speed reading IIRC.

Laser "Jammers" can work exceptionally well, I spent an evening a couple of years ago with a Gentleman who just happened to own an LTI2020 which is still fairly standard speed trap kit for scamera vans and traffic police.

using a jammer (cant remember the brand, sorry) he could not get a speed reading at all until the device shut itself down after a few seconds.

Word of warning, THESE ARE ILLEGAL TO USE! I believe there was a thread in SP&L a while ago about some poor chap who had his car confiscated as evidence, possible prosecuted for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

You can buy a "garage door opener" which will actually open an automatic garage door, but has the side effect of jamming laser speed traps. A friend of mine has one of these on the front of his car, and the relevant bits to open his garage door.

He was promptly done for speeding by being "zapped" from the rear! so if you go this route get two of them one for each end of the car.

How well one of these would protect you from prosecution because it has a legitimate use I have no idea. but if it gives you peace of mind then fair enough.

hope that helps

edit to say www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk is a great site with lots of honest reviews of equipment.

Garage door opener/remote control kit....

Agree - detectors are illegal now. I have Road Angel Navigator, and it is great for alerting all of the 'accident black spots' and advised speed limit. But it is big and clumky if you don't want the satnav too. I notice I use it as the principal speedo, possibly cos it is easy to see, and it is accurate. Can't give top marks for the navigation though, sometimes a bit dodgy. I have been dumped in the middle of the wilderness with the comforting message of "you have arrived" more than once. I have been told this is a fault of post code navigation. Certainly the satnav in the Beemer (uses address) has always been spot on.

you can allways add the pocketgps database to your satnav.

then you only need one device.

I've got tomtom on my mobile, with the pocketgps database. so got everything in one small device, plus it will run on the battery, plus it's allways with me, handy when swapping cars.

I am reliably informed that detectors are NOT illigal YET.
As for why you would want one over a GPS device, well it tells you whether the cameras are live for starters.
If you were only going for for one device, I would go for a GPS based device as it gives much more warning than a detector.
Having both gives ultimate protection, but having said that, using a pair of eyes to look at the road ahead is fairly effective, as is driving at a sensible speed.

ok if you want go for the full setup the origin B2 provides GPS location, laser detection, an option for a radar detection module, and a further option to connect the Lidetek LE30 laser defuser. Now then I dont go speeding in built areas !!!

I tested the radar module against a K band gun and it works well, like you should detect them before you see them, The laser also tested well and the diffuser works, despite what you read in the press they cannot tell. I have also noticed with the laser the ease of which I got a stupid reading !!! and that was with the SL700 the new laser kiddie on the block with a 1 mile range !!
