Looks like I'm off to Dunkeld for a week shortly.

What are the roads like in that area for 'good' driving.

Any recommendations?

Roads are generally tarmac.

We drive on the left up here.

If you were up for August 16, there's a Glenvarigill [Ferarri, Porsche, Maserati TVR main dealer] track day at Knockhill. Should be pretty good to watch.

I am indeed in Scotland. Made it to just north of Fort William. Posting this from my mobile- just try 2 keep me away from Pistonheads!

Fantastic windy single carriage roads. Little traffic. Been raining though keep an eye out 4 the potholes too!

S3 performing way above expectations.

Off 2 north and then west & Isles so should get even better.

Hi Bro!

GPRS dodgy here and whisky waiting so i'm off.

I don't use the A9 as far as possible, there are a couple of particularly nasty cameras on it around the perth part of it, one being hidden behind a road sign!!!! (don't know if that one works though).

If you have a few days, you could carry on up to Dalwhinnie and go across a small road, A889, to the A86 and then to Spean Bridge. This brings you to the fantastic A82 south through Glencoe and Loch Lomond to Glasgow. Probably about a 6 hour drive from Dunkeld to Glasgow this way.
Kind of a long way home but definately worth it as the driving and views are spectacular, even in summer the roads are fairly quiet.
You know you want to!!!!!

I would guess that it was the A82 that page3 took if he is up in the Fort William area.

Have you got a bluish S3 by any chance, thought I spotted one on the A9 on Sunday.

Morning everybody,

Myself & other half will be blasting up north for 2 weeks on the 2/8 (driving through the night) to stay with my parents. Lovely views over Loch Carron and the Isle of Skye on the west coast.
Most of the main roads are lovely!! and even the single track ones are good fun. There is a fantastic road (the highest in the UK I believe- 2,500ft above sea level)with views like no other. If anyone is that way during the first two weeks of August give me a shout, its worth it.

Going up in Sept, prob Loch Carron/Plockton/Kishorn area. Still trying to get a cottage booked as we speak.
Anyone help here? Biggest prob is persuading g/f that we need to take the Tivvy, as we can get more stuff in the 306 and the dog is more comfortable too. Also she doesn't drive the Tiv so I will have to do all the driving, including pub trips. Currently have a possibility in Poolewe and near Loch Carron but wanted a Loch view if poss.
Edited to say that the g/f isn't the dog, it's the g/f who doesn't drive the Tiv and the dog doesn't drive it either.

Sounds good to me, we are in no rush and will only be heading back for
Mania during Friday.

What's the speed along the route and what's the
camera / trap status there?

Thanks again for the tip!

From Dunkeld, take the road over towards Blairgowrie, then north up through Glenshee, Braemar, then A93 towards Ballater, turn north over the Lecht, Grantown-on-Spey, and back down the A9 to Dunkeld. Going down the A9, there are some great bits of the 'old' A9 which are twistier NSL, and much more fun driving than the trunk road.

Alternative from Dunkeld is to head west into Perthshire - anything around Loch Earn/Loch Tay/Glen Lyon - although at this time of year you will need to watch out for caravans

Have fun...

Pretty much all NSL apart from through the villages.
A9 is fairly bad for cameras/traffic cops all the way to Inverness, there's a couple of high speed unmarked cars hanging around usually.
Once you get off at Dalwhinnie there's no fixed ones, that I remember, out of towns. There may be a car with a gun in one or two places, very rare, but the roads are quite twisty in places and long straights where you can see for miles in other places (if the weathers good, it's scotland remember!!!)
Once you get south of Loch Lomond it's dual carriageway into glasgow and the road south.

If I remember right, Top Gear magazine done a feature a while back where they drove a Carrera 4S or something round they roads and off into Rannoch Moor and absolutely loved the drive, even though it was pi55ing down.

page3 may be able to enlighten us on the camera/police situation at the moment.

I'm of up to Aberdeen on Saturday (26th) for a couple of nights then making my way back via Aviemore and The Lakes and finally Oulton Park. Going straight to A'deen but would welcome any suggestions on roads to get from there to Aviemore.

Also, anyone in the area for a blast one day/evening early next week, if so, mail me for contact details as it's always more fun if you've got company - by that I mean another car not another person!

Depends how meandering you want to be

Aberdeen, A93 west, over the Lecht to Tomintoul, Grantown, Aviemore.

(I think I did that in not much over an hour once. Great road...)

Or you can head a little further north, go via Alford, over the Cabrach road into Dufftown, and down from there. A little bit more of a minor road, but again great driving.

Cheers Size Nine.

I was up there for a wedding last year when I had my Audi, I think ended up going via Blairgowrie and Ballater to Grantown-on-Spey. Good roads but a bit up and down and bouncy, girlfriend didn't approve - particularly as she was nursing a hangover, sister of the bride and all that.

Is the route you recommended fast sweeping bends or tight twisties? I'm not bothered either way, but the less pot-holes and sheep the better!

Thanks for everyone's great advice.

Having chatted to my good lady, who knows Scotland very well, this is the plan.

Based in Dunkeld:

1) Day trip as Size Nine Elm recommended to take in the Cairngorms. A923, A93 and back.

2) Day trip A9 to Inverness, A82 down past Loch Ness
to Fort William, back A86, A889 and A9 as jock-tt mentioned.

3) Come home A9 A827 past Loch Tay, over to the A82 and down to Glasgow onto the A74M, again taking in
part of jock-tt's route.

Sounds good to me! Thanks Guys

Reeso, I think we may be too far apart to meet up -
what do you think?
