Buying my first TVR
Discussion
Hi,
I am very tempted to buy a TVR mid next year with around a maximum of 14k to spend. I am 23 and have always wanted one. Also I am planning to use it everyday and I only currently do about 170 miles a week.
I want to know firstly if I am mad using one everyday, then the sorts of costs I will incur along with which Trev to buy any comments welcome.
Cheers
Nick

Hey Nick,
I was 21 when I got my first TVR. It was a 4L Chimaera and I used it as an every day car, driving too and from work (probably about 11 mile round trip) in all weather. Probably ended up doing about the same milage as you.
I'd definitely recommend a Chim as a first venture into the marque. Probably one of the most solid of the bunch as far as reliability goes. You'd pick up a very decent example for £14k. If I can remember, the running costs in one year were somewhere around:
1) £700k service.
2) Petrol and oil - I could go through about £60 in just a weekend, or £60 for the whole week, depending on how I was driving. It also liked to drink Mobil 1 and I'd probably spend about £40 every 2-3 months.
3) Insurance - £2500.
2nd Chim a couple of years later had a few issues with it and I think the most I spent at service time was about £2500, that was to sort out a failed clutch and a few bits and bobs. Also had other electrical issues, starter motor overheating, etc, but they were sorted under dealer's year warranty.
If I could do it all again? Hell yeah! That's why I pick my Tuscan up in a couple of weeks! Sod the running costs, once you drive one you won't be able to resist. You also won't be able to get rid of the grin you'll have every time you start the engine! There's nothing else like it..
Good luck!

Nope, not mad. I bought mine when I was 24 and have used it as an everyday car for the last 3 years, 20 miles per day plus weekends - about 12k per year.
Find yourself a good local indy for servicing and repairs.
I average about 20mpg on a commute, 24mpg on the motorway, quite a lot less when having fun.
£14k is plenty nowadays, lots of choice.
Shameless plug - you can have mine for 9k (I've been told it's time to grow up
... but I will be back!)
