I need to weatherproof the hood on the S, what is the best stuff to use and where can I buy it? I need to do it in a hurry, as I will be taking the car to the Lake District in a couple of weeks, at the moment I get dripped on when it rains.

Thompsons Waterseal works very well for me. Be careful not to let it drip onto the paintwork as it can be a b*gger to get off if it dries.

Mine was leaking like crazy so I painted the roof a week ago with fabsil as recommended to me and it's been bone dry since. You can get the stuff from camping shops. I got a 5l can from millets for 24 quid. It's way more than you need but it's something that needs doing regularly.

Is it best to brush it on or spray

I've used the Thompsons Waterseal in the past as well and I have to say it was good. The brush on stuff is always easier to get an even coating and is easier to stop it getting on the paintwork.

I've used a spray can of FabiSeal I bought from Milletts. Works well. Just depends on the cause of your leek in the first place? Cheers.......

Thanks for you help, I’ll get down the camping shop if possible, if not does anyone like Halfords do something? The roof is getting soaked and the water drips inside near the side window, has been ok but seems to be taking in water lately that’s why I thought some weather proofing.

i used spray on fabsil about a year ago, and the thing to make sure is that you go over the stitched areas 3 or 4 times. even after a year, it's still pretty dry, but i'll have to do it again soon.
just make sure you wipe any off the paint/ plastic window before it dries.

I used renovo's products recently to recolour and seal my roof and was very pleased with the results. Here is there internet site

I use Fabsil every spring on both the soft tops. Brush on, not spray.

Paul,

Thompsons works well for me on my S3. You can get it from most DIY shops and it's cheaper than Fabsil. It's best to use a paint brush as it's not too easy to spray on and keep off the paint/windows/rear screen. If you do get it on any of the above white spirit works well to get it off.

Thomspsons Weatherseal? Thats designed for brickwork isn't it? Don't really fancy using that on my roof!

Halford sell an Autoglym product, containing a cleaner to apply first, then a waterproofer. Suggests annual application.
Is it any good? I don't know, as its been on a shelf in the garage for a year, as I've not got round to doing it yet - DOH!

I bought that kit at the weekend as I couldn’t get the fabsil stuff, it’s not bad and was recommend by someone from my mini owners club who uses it on his concourse mini cabriolet, I did find that it didn’t remove some of the marks on the hard panels but was very good on the rear folding bit. Not sure if it’s waterproof as not been out in the rain yet.

I've usedd the Autoglym stuff on my Griff and it does work.

Even with a hose pipe on the roof(when washing it) most of the water just rolls off rather than soaking in.

The AutoGlym stuff works well - the fabric looks a lot better once the stuff is on. The roof and rear needed doing and all the muck etc came off no problem. Easy to apply etc.

Related question, can anyone recommend anything for the rear screen to get it nice and transparent, rather than a bit murky as mine currently is?

Thanks,

Steve

I've found it clears after a routine application of RainX

It's BECAUSE it's for brickwork that Waterseal is so good! Seals very well, but is flexible enough and doesn't need renewing as frequently as Fabsil in my experience.
