Planning a trip to the Dordogne in the Tamora. Is super unleaded freely available at petrol stations over there? Not planning on using much of the motorways, so interested to know if its available in places other than the services on the autoroutes!

When we did the Furball last year most of our routes were off the main roads and I had no problem getting super at all - the only exception being Italy where we couldn't find it at all.

I think most of the Italian stuff is high-octane anyway? I've certainly never had a problem with Agip fuels over there.

As for the french, yeah most places have Super.

We always travel via the back-routes to Le Mans (or anywhere through France) and don't have any problems getting super-unleaded.

If you're really anal about having Shell, they have a decent station finder where you can search for the super-branded fuels.

Its widely available, and higher octane too IIRC. Isn't 98 or 99 octane widely available as well?

You shouldn't have any trouble finding it. As noted before, it also tends to be higher rated than the stuff over here (minimum of 98, unlike the 97 BP/Total we get here).

I was with zippee on the furball. Yep france is no problem for decent fuel, in fact if anything there fuel is better because unlike over here where only shell v power is decent, there all the main brands are high octaine. But finding petrol stations that are open can be fun. We adopted a at 150 fuel up attitude and in driving 3000 miles only once did we use the emergency supply of fuel (in italy).

Italian fuel, i am sorry is terrible. The car was very unhappy in italy no matter what brand we used, but when we got to switzerland we were treated to 100 octaine shell which blew away the cobwebs.

Oh yes, unless you have a french credit card and PIN, or confident that the machine will accept your card, take it that you can only get fuel during normal working hours unless on the autoroute. I once had an an automatic petrol pump in Italy literally spit my credit card out so that it landed on the ground behind me. laugh. This was 2 years ago, and everybody had buggered off for lunch.

A 150+ mile fuel range though, Jeeez that must have been painful. You must have been stationary almost as much as you moving?

I would not want to create the wrong impression the car was capable of going at least 250 miles, its just the ground we were covering and the roads meant that fuels stops were a luxary and you grabbed it when you could!
